Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

It's just not right

I am not a former employee but still an employee and yes that's all I see is age discrimination. I just had a young person that just got out of high school beat me out of a job and I had been there 18 years. And I have two degrees! And it's not the first time! They said that person fit with the team. I'm like really! They did not earn it. I've paid thousands of dollars for education and gave up things. Spent all my money and time on it plus all the experience that I have. It's just not right. If I could find something outside to pay my bills I would be gone. This company is getting worse!

The OP( @W46epik-2lnz ) highlighted the unfair practices that are happening all too often at WM.

Why do you assume OP is working in the store with his or her two degrees? There are certainly plenty of people working at home office or San Bruno with multiple degrees. It’s no different from any other white collar environment.

To the people who keep bashing on the OP for having two college degrees and being at WM-----that's not as ridiculous as you think. It's very easy to have happen. Many people, even today, don't realize that colleges themselves are big business; they're not there to sell you a career, just a piece of paper. This is how prospective students end up seriously taking the advice of 'career counsellors' who push them into majors like Art Education and Data Processing and English History, etc.

And you spend all that money and invest all that time and come out with a diploma that will do you absolutely NOTHING in the real world job market. It almost should be illegal for colleges to get away with doing that,.....but it's all based on freedom of choice.

So choose wisely.

A while ago we had a very terrible class they class they called spark training. In the class they straight up said the company wants young people because they will adapt faster to the new technologies.

To the last poster: I've seen exactly that scenario play out at my old store, and I've seen a young female dept. lead forced into the assistant manager program against her wishes----while older males had been practically begging for a shot. That's why I love seeing this company in trouble now

An older lady at my store who had filled in for the former Dept Mgr. of deli was overlooked twice for 20 somethings who had been there less than 6 months. One failed horribly and was forced to step down but not before they tried to move him into another supervisor position by forcing a trade with an older tenured bakery supervisor who did not want to move and then they pick another young one who may be 20 and hired 5 months ago. The older lady took it up the chain but nothing. The age discrimination was so blatant it made other associates jaw drop.

If you have 2 degrees and stuck with Walmart, you wasted your education

This goes to the OP (and assuming that person is not a troll; there are so many creepy people all over this site now) :

I understand, agree with and sympathize completely with your situation. I too have a degree, was with WM for many years, saw early on the futility in trying to advance and the complete disregard for my education and previous management experience. Ultimately, I made the wise decision to jump ship and better my life. Very glad I did.

I watched that company go from where virtually everyone had an opportunity to shine, to pull themselves up and prove what they coud do---I saw cart pushers and truck unloaders become salaried managers---to where it is now: the ultimate popularity contest, where promotions are given to people who literally---I've seen this---can't multiply or divide.

Walmart employment now is good for only two groups of people: young students and old retirees, neither who are trying to support themselves.

It is the antithesis of everything Sam had set up.

Even if there is age discrimination, you can’t do anything about it. Stop complaining and do your job.

Age discrimination is very present at the Sam's I work at. Favoritism, giving people lead jobs because they are friends with management. For the person slamming the original author of this post shame on you for being so rude. Tenure should count for something. Having a so called "union job"? What do you mean by that remark? Walmart/Sam's do not care about their employees. I have seen this for the past 10 years now. They should embrace the people who have been there, come to work, who don't call in. All I see in our club is a bunch of young people who have zero common sense, who call in during events, making it harder on all of us who show up to work day after day.

WM is changing. The company used to listen to it's associates and customers, now it listens only to shareholders. Customers are not happy with the stores, employees used to be valued and are now just numbers, and all the out sourcing is just going to make things worse. Yes business has always mattered but people and values mattered too. The reason we had so many long term associates was because hard work and loyalty mattered. When there is no security, no caring and no loyalty from the top down, don't expect it from the bottom up. There is a downward spiral to employee moral that only can be stopped with actions from the top. Keep cutting people from the stores, keep filling the HO with temps and visa holders, keep outsourcing and the only reason to work for WM will be to ..... I don't know. What will be the reason?

It's nobody's fault that you chose to go and get two degrees. It's nobody's fault that you spent "thousands" and "gave up things". Those were choices YOU MADE. The fact that you've been there 18 years and are getting passed over probably should tell you something. Tenure does not necessarily equate to talent. If you wanted a job where tenure was going to get you somewhere then perhaps you should've went into a union job 18 years ago.
