Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Protected Employees

I’m really glad UP decided to keep that guy who does his grad school homework all day long. Well, that’s an exaggeration - he also spends quite a bit of time grading the homework of his 11 homeschooled kids. How about those guys who go to Starbucks twice a day and meander the hallways looking to catch up with their buds? Oh, glad to see they’re safe as well. Surely those people who take 2-hour lunches and consistently sneak out of work early because their boss leaves early, or they don’t even sit in the same area as their boss ... surely, they must be toast? Nope. How about the ones who sit on their work for months on end in the name of job security and their bosses who condone and/or allow their behavior? All safe? What in the world does it take to get laid off in the glass palace anyways? A good salary or title that was earned through merit? Coming too close to vesting for railroad retirement?

Never at another company have I witnessed as many extramarital affairs as I have at UP, and most of them were superior-subordinate. Funny how UP managed to find all of the snakes in Omaha and promote them so they could prowl the halls looking for their next pretty young thing to paw, bring Starbucks for, promote, and I shudder to think what else.

You forgot to mention those who are close friends with the boss, those who get others to do their work, and those who are screwing the boss.

Smarter, not harder and doing more with less are buzz phrases for concepts that actually never really materialize....

Sounds like you should have worked smarter, not harder.

I’ve seen a lot of opportunity given to the same people who always seem to get it. It’s always funny how people are given positions for development, yet no one is able to apply to them because their might be someone more qualified in the ranks. It’s still a good ol boys club at the glass palace, except it’s less actual boys, and more college buddies or old friends from pas roles. Nothing here is merit based, it’s all a popularity contest and who likes or doesn’t like you, no matter the quality of your work. Pay is given randomly with no actual structure, which is why a new person can be making 15k more for doing the same job as the person who’s been doing it for 5 years. Smh

UP has a lot of StUPid schmucks there

A lot of bottom feeders got to keep their jobs while other talented young employees got shown the door because their job title didn't fit UPs new org structure. There is a lot of remaining intelligent employees actively applying elsewhere since no one in management can give any substance on their statements that these changes will create opportunities for people. The "opportunities" I've seen first hand is just giving someone more work with no pay increase.

Up will never fire thier husbands, nieces, local celebs, grandsons of great railroaders of yore, old frat buddies or any eeo hires.

But, if youre a every day schmuck that puts in your hours, gets a 3, jumps when they say jump, you get moved into the expendable pile.
