Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

I had to go to FOX News to hear anyone defend GM workers

It is a shame that I had to go to Fox News and Tucker Carlson to hear anyone challenge the disgraceful way white collar workers have been treated at GM: to let white collar workers twist in the wind for three months and then go through 2 weeks of humiliations and ingratitude from Mary Barra for the $10.8 billion profit that the GM employees produced for her in 2018.

No one at the Free Press, the Detroit News, or any of the newly elected Democrats in Michigan have a word to say about these layoffs. Nothing about the billions of dollars spent on stock buybacks by Mary Barra to protect herself and the Board from Greenlight Capital or other predatory investors. No one is talking about the obvious bad judgement calls Barra made to move Cadillac to NY and back again. According to GM 40% of the white collar workforce was hired in the past 5 years and yet now, this bunch of management geniuses are saying that 1. They hired too many people and, 2. The people they hired don’t have the right skill set and, 3. That their performance review process is a failure, and 4. That management apparently have no clue how to develop systems to utilize people with STEM and other degrees. Despite all this, no one is challenging her decision to go all in on electric cars even though GM is making its money selling SUVs and pickups that are unlikely to go electric anytime soon.

My suggestion to GM (and Ford and Fiat) workers is that you should get in touch with your Democratic reps and (your local newspapers) tell them you plan to stay home next election if they can’t do better than silence when big companies in their own backyard treat their constituents so poorly.

The light and shallow attention from all the press and pols, even local, of a huge layoff from a huge strategic company looks "arranged."

You might want to tune in a little more often to find out what the other networks aren’t talking about.

Why is it a shame? Have Hillary and Mary shamed you for watching Fox news? Deplorable!

I agree with the out of touch or afraid. Back in November when I heard Mary Barra was going before Michigan and Ohio lawmakers I contacted our representatives to make sure that while their focus would be on the high visibility plant allocations (which I think most people understand in this industry) ...that there needed to some hard questions about why in the midst of record profits they were planning draconian cuts to thousands of white collar employees - many of whom they had just hired. Not a since lawmaker asked a single hard question about any of it (But I did get nice letters back from the lawmakers offices though).

To the OP his is the best summary of the situation I have read on this tread.

For anybody who hasn't seen the News Piece ... it is a must see at https://youtu.be/Fi2jkAVMXnI. It is a sad reality that our elected leaders, local news outlets (and ABC, NBC and CBS national) are either so out of touch or afraid of GM backlash that they are unwilling to cover what is happening to thousands of families.

I heard this week Elon Musk cut the price of his latest Tesla model. Most Americans don't want electric cars, they want to fill up at the gas station the old fashioned way!

Is this the NEW GM?? Worst restructure I've ever heard of, let alone experience. White collar professionals, most enjoyed their career & dedicated themselves, who are then shamed - provided a box, informed how to conduct themselves and escorted out mortified. Before this humility, it was 4 months of speculation, anxiety and unnecessary stress. GM is absolutely squashing the news channels! It has barely been covered, only a quick 20 second report on the # of separations. If the actual separation process, impact on families, suppliers & economy of MI was reported, it would have a negative impact on GM and Whitmer. The fact is, there isn't enough quality career opportunities in MI for us to be absorbed. Potential new employers understand supply & demand, there is a surplus of white collar and will offer mediocre salary. Others who haven't been separated will have 2x more work & stress, GM will inform them to be grateful, they are still employed. Highly recommend to watch "The Company Men" on Netflix - our lives are not as lavish but plot is exactly the same! At this time, everyone must do what's best for them & their families.

I learned all about how the layoff process worked from a Detroit News article the day before I experienced it firsthand. There are also several News and Free Press articles regarding job opportunities available to those of us who were just laid off. Real news doesn't choose sides. It sounds like the original poster was just looking for opinion pieces.

help educate the younger hires on your point of view and what happened at GM........it will make them think twice about the amount of emotional loyalty they invest with the company and help reduce their attachment suffering when a layoff possibly hits them.....it is probably human nature for us to want to feel comfortable and secure in any job, but reality does not seem to match that in corporate America.....maybe at a few companies but not GM.....10 years or so ago the company went totally bust so I would always question in the back of my mind any long term success or security.

the last comment shows you don't listen to fox news or tucker carlson much, tucker carlson says a lot to criticize the anti wealthy elite class and corporations, maybe you should listen to Tucker and fox news yourself for a week or for a while instead of believing what your friends or other pundits say about tucker and fox news

The left thinks things about the right that aren't true. And vice versa. It also depends on how left/right one is. Media plays into your psyche and milks your emotions accordingly. That is how you develop biases. Tucker Carlson is one who demystifies some hidden biases. I will not say he is perfect but close to that. He brings up great and valid points.

Normally Fox News only cares about the wealthy and corporations.

Shocking that they would defend average American workers.

Think about this also. Allowing professionals to be brought in on visas, and doubling down on the idea that white collar professionals don't belong to unions and congratulations your STEM degree will never pay for itself.

Face it, they are laying off older workers and still hiring! This is what companies do these days. They may tell you that it is a business decision, that they need a different skill set, they may even tell you that dealing with the engineering design issues of an electric car are so grossly different that they can't be handled by an experienced engineer.

The question is why do you believe it? If they need to get smaller than they should not be hiring. None of the excuses add up except that the model is to churn employees.

The CAD designers tried to unionize back in 1995, It was voted down and never tried again.

I would also add that professionals pay for their own training and our wages have not kept pace. Companies are increasingly demanding expensive qualifications when the salaries and employment lengths won't cover the expense.

One advantage that unions bring, is that their members rarely are out thousands and years for an education and they expect that their training will be covered by the company. Companies have gotten away with asking their management employees to supervise the work while paying them less and booting them when it suits them.

there is a lot of groupthink in the corporate world, also lying and smugness

Personally, I believe that it is time that engineers unionize. I don't work for GM, but I have been through the process. The pact that white collar employees and companies had is broken. It was once a given that companies did not lay off white collar workers unless things were dire, but that trust has eroded over the decades and it has become business practice to churn workers. without a union, white collar workers have become vulnerable, while older union workers are protected from this kind of disruption at their most vulnerable.

The only way to stop this is that engineer form a national union, which dictates employment terms.

Tucker Carlson is as real as he gets! Really honest and true to his tagline - The sworn enemy of lying, pomposity, smugness and groupthink.

People left in GM are mediocre and unmarketable. People let go - you have been given $ to get out of jail. Make the best of it. GM will miss you, but not for long. They will not stay in business that much longer!
