Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

How do people deal with the constant threat of layoffs?

I keep telling myself it's over, we're safe for at least a while - but I still can't get myself to stop worrying and stressing. There's always some doubt that's keeping me up at night. I wouldn't be stressing if the job market was better, but with so many cuts in the industry all around...

So how do you keep the worry at bay?

And there will be another round of cut soon? Can anyone confirm?

Let me get out the crystal ball and read the tea leaves, hang on tight.

I guess at this stage you have to take the chance and know when to jump ship, most of my friends aren't in a position or willing to do that. It's not easy and I wish it wasn't this way.

Mary Barra is on her way out the door soon anyway. She hasn't taken the company in a good direction and basically destroyed it. Stock price is 34 and change people. Let's hope Ruess dosent take her place.

That's a load of BS, I have worked with allot of good people at GM, it's different for everyone. Are they nasty, probably now they are. It's the same at Ford and FCA, very tough crowd of people at times.

You have to make a decision and stop being a victim. What is it worth to you to stay at GM? Are the golden handcuffs of ridiculously high pay and benefits worth living life miserable? Accept that if you leave GM, you may struggle financially and may have to downsize your life in a big way, but also know that you gain mental stability simply from being away from the negative, abusive environment.

Most people aren't willing to take that risk which is why GM employees are some of the most miserable, nasty people on the planet.

There's no such thing as 100% job security. I don't know why anyone would assume there is. Maybe it's because I hopped around to a few different companies before I landed at GM midway through my career, but my job security was always on me. Make sure you're always challenging yourself and learning. Keep up with new trends in your field. Join a professional association and go to local meetings. As long as you do those things, you won't have to worry about clinging to some mythical job where you work 30 years and get a golden watch.

You need to find stable employment and the auto industry is as stable as an active volcano during any year. Get out.

Ask yourself that question once again.

Why do you want to slave for a company that doesn't even give you a peace of mind, where you're disposable, no loyalty is shown to you, and where you're constantly treated as a threat to the company's profits? And worse yet, keeps you awake at nights fearing your job?

That is no way for anyone to live. I was laid off in February and I had trouble sleeping Before & After the fact. I'm now at a new job making a little less money but then before but the work environment is so much better. I'm sleeping better, Feeling better, and haven't been happier in years.

There is life after GM. Your situation does not sound ideal and I hope you're able to get some peace of mind. For me, Getting laid off was the best thing that's happened to me in years.

Best of luck and I hope everything goes well for you

Yes like others have said, look for a new job, go on some interviews. Also, keep your costs low, don't stop living, but minimize fixed costs. No car payment, low rent, cheap phone and so on. If you do get let go you will have more time to search for a new job plus less stress. Even if you had a job with lower pay for awhile your bills won't be as issue.

You will feel a lot better when to you find an opportunity at another company. Trust me, I've been down that road. GM laying off 15000 employees was not an accident. There is something going on within the company that Management is not telling us. Report just came out in the news that GM tried to sell Renaissance Center last year, its crown jewel.

Change is tough, but you have to look after yourself and your family at the end of the day. You will sleep better at night once you have an offer somewhere else.

They deal with it by actively looking for a better job and getting the heck outta there!

What helps me feel better is to have my resume updated and send it out to jobs that seem interesting to me. To control what you can.

One thing is for sure it won't ever be the same at these places unless they can provide job security, and I don't see that happening unless you are super lucky. If I was to return it would always be in the back of my mind that's for sure. I just hope we can find peace including myself, pray to God.
