What ever happened to the people that would know how to run the company that started from the bottom and worked there way up . After all that's how America became strong . Not some CEO that never worked for the railroads.

The bulk of the higher level individuals in mechanical have all came up through the ranks from union jobs and have mail in degrees...very few have a real bachelors or mba or have been in any other company or positions of leadership to develop their skills through the years. They simply are a part of the good old boy network that has existed for years...you cover my back and I’ll help you get ahead mentality whether you are right for the job or not. These are the same people you b*tch about on here constantly. These are the same people in charge that haven’t left because where are they going to go? They have never worked anywhere else. They would never make it in another company because they have no one looking out for them.
You mean like Harrison and Vena that both started in Union ranks? Or like Jim Young and Jack Koraleski who were finance guys their entire railroad careers in Omaha? The issue here really is agreement employees do not innovate. You don’t see anything besides your yard or territory. If it were up to the unions we’d still have 5 man crews. Do you really understand how the railroad works with China, or how the demands of multinational customers sets priorities, or how to manage activist investors?? The real issue here is a lack of understanding by the ranks how outside forces really “run” the railroad, and not the guy sitting in the CEO chair. Since the industrial revolution labor is becoming less necessary, it’s just reality, not a result of one person’s decisions.
I agree with the idea the OP has that the person running the show should know what he’s talking about and managing. But there has been senior level avp’s that started as brakemen and they were clueless. Also Vena started from the bottom at another railroad. Do you like him? Harrison started at the bottom as well and he’s the one that started this PSR.
This idea of "working your way up from the bottom" keeps coming up over and over, often with a side helping of references to "real Americans" or some other similarly nebulous idea. It is almost always being proposed by an agreement employee.
If the average railroader (many of whom have trouble logging into MyUP and completing online learning modules) was given control of the railroad the results would be catastrophic. In general, the average agreement employee doesn't have the skills, education, or training to run a business as large and complex as a railroad. Knowing how to fasten a tie is not an essential skill for running a globally integrated integrated supply chain.
If you don't like how UP is run (it is an awful place to work), do what many of us have already done and move on to a better job.
