Using your boss as a reference post lay-off

I was laid off in June. Applied for a position outside Chase that needed a reference. So I texted my boss & these are her exact words “Hey Sorry I was not at my desk when you called. I was told that Management has advised us we can only be a reference for internal positions”.....unless you’re BFF’s with them they’ll never be of use to you in your post Chase life. All they will do is confirm what dates you worked at Chase. They won't say anything good or bad about you.

Yes, it is actually Chase policy not to refer to avoid lawsuits for bad references just in case. So your ex-manager is not to blame.
