I wouldn't read too much into the article shared by the OP. The fact of the matter is that young, educated, and talented people are not drawn to the railroad industry.
The railroads offer a young professional nothing but antiquated technology, dysfunctional management, hostile bureaucracy, grumpy/entitled unionized workforces, and below average salaries for the 24/7/365 demands of the industry.
Word has also gotten around many college campuses about the toxicity of the UP culture, and many academic departments are no longer inviting UP to recruting fairs, or are severing ties with them completely.
makes sense since Bezos invests in great forward thinking companies like blue origin and now Union Pa.... yeah don’t think so lmao. He already had to give his ex wife several billion dollars. He’d probably give her even more voluntarily before he’d touch the toxic cesspool known as Enron Pacific.
