Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

When can I rejoin Verizon after severance?

How long do I have to wait? I was laid off early Q2 and I did not take an enhanced package. I don’t understand the severance agreement, and I can’t find any specific language on how long I have to wait to get employment. Any insight out there?

Former emplees are eligible to apply after 6 months. This is the rule for everyone, except for those who were part of the voluntary layoff several years ago. The details should be in the offer letter.

Three former colleagues of mine who were long time employees rejoined around a year or so after they left. They did not bridge their vacation but are still considered long time employees of the company. It is a good place to work if you are in a good group with good people and a good leader.
You just have to pay attention and give more than you take and be ready to duck when it is time to duck.

So IIRC, if you were laid off and given, say, 20 weeks of severance, then you could rejoin the company after 20 calendar weeks. What is that, 5 months? But you don't get any time bridged, meaning you start over with only two weeks of paid vacation, the three-year clock for you to be eligible for vesting in your 401(k) starts over, etc. You're a new employee.
If you come back within those 20 weeks, say at 15 weeks, you have to pay back the remainder of the severance (5 weeks in our example), but your time gets bridged. You get to start over accruing vacation at the higher rate, etc. I knew someone who did it (years ago) and was glad to be back. They were actually a great worker and VZ should be glad to have kept them. In fact I think they got promoted after the VSP.

After the weeks of the severance have paid out, I would think is a safe bet. Their goal was to reduce costs and your's was to pocket some money quick and cheap. If it looks too good to be true it often is, and so was VSP to all but those near retirement. My guess is that is what you found out. I know a couple of people who were laid off with sizeable severances who returned. They seem happy to be back.

@10ceXg9i-3qsd Perplexed why you would say this. Several people answered the question. However the OP was not clear on whether s/he was seeking employment as a contractor or as an employee. One can assume they mean employee since the title stated "rejoin", but it may be an incorrect assumption. The sarcasm you threw out there is not an answer to the question.

There is a reason you were probably laid off. More than likely you wouldn't get re-hired.

OP: Are you serious about the posted question??

Or are you asking for the fun of it??

Are you planning to go back to your old job and duties??

Do you know someone in high places but then you would have never had to be exiled??

How receptive do you think VZ will be to hire back people with experience as contractors? Obviously will depend on how much demand there is for that department and skill set but curious what are the odds they hire people back.

You can come back in 6 months as a contractor and 1 year as an employee. There are exceptions to the 1 year employee rule (after 6 months), but it requires executive signoff stating you have a skill set that is severely business impacting and that skill set can't be supplied elsewhere. If you come back as an employee, there may be if applicable pension impacts.

It is not 6 months, it is 1 year. It is right in the severance agreement you signed. Maybe treat yourself right by not coming back to this trash company.

You have better odds moving on to something else than being rehired.
