Thread regarding Lowe's Cos. layoffs

Marvin’s Golf Vacation

Wondering what Marvin’s doing the weekend after a big layoff? He’s golfing. I opened this morning in my store to my Spawn of Satan SM running everyone ragged like a lunatic to get the store clean, “why?” I asked him. “Because Marvin is coming either Sunday or Monday!” He said. I asked if this was just a gimmick cause we are always supposed to get visits that never happen, and my manager told me that Sunday and Monday Lowe’s is hosting a charity golf classic here in my hometown of Rochester NY, at one of the most luxurious hotels in town and one of the most exclusive country clubs in the state! As a matter of fact it has hosted the US Open 3 times in its history as well as 10 other major tournaments and is number 20 on Golf Digest’s list of the 100 best golf courses in America.
I went to the website and I was reading the itinerary and I wonder how Marvin or Joe will be able to come to the stores when they are attending the rooftop c—tail and Hors D' Oeuvres reception,or when they are out on the links, or the awards dinner and reception that evening. I just think it is very very bad optics that three days after firing several thousand employees nationwide to cut costs the executive leadership thinks it’s a wise decision to fly the private jets from North Carolina to NY to come to a charity golf outing the company is flipping the bill for and hosting at a exclusive country club and luxury boutique hotel. It really disgusts me. I spent my whole shift being driven like a pack mule by my store manager so that the store looks good so it will be ready for Marvin.

The final nail in the coffin for me is that I was scheduled off for Sunday and at 1:55 with five minutes to go in my shift my SM pulls me in to the office and tells me I have to work Sunday in case Marvin comes in. I told him I have plans Sunday and he informed me that Dept Supervisors should never make plans on days off in case we are needed and having been with Lowe’s 7 years I should know that by now. I find this all so ironic because I love golf, as a matter of fact my Father loves golf, he has since he was a teenager. My Dad told me one the happiest days in his life was the day he took me golfing for the first time so he could share the game with me. Tomorrow is my Dads birthday and since I was off Sunday I already booked us a tee time at the local county course (I’m not a great golfer like my dad, and unlike Marvin neither myself or my father can afford to go to a country club). My Dad was really excited cause we have only gone out 4 times this year and he was really looking forward to a morning with just the 2 of us out on the links. I could hear the disappointment in his voice but he understands that I have to keep my job. 😔

So to all the Lowe’s employees that read this I realize it was more of a personal rant more than anything but keep your eyes out on Lowesnet for a picture of Marvin handing out a big check that we can afford to give away to charity instead of giving it to our employees. And I hope Marvin and Joe enjoy our local hospitality and a great game off golf, I won’t be lucky enough to golf this weekend with my Dad or really celebrate his birthday with him but hey, I gotta keep the money rolling in so Lowe’s can host more big events while me and my coworkers work short staffed to keep Marvin’s money train running. Oh and remember “God Bless”

I looked at the website for the event as I am a golfer and I thought wouldn’t it be nice to go and play and bump into the turtle? maybe I could tell him how he’s sinking the company like I sank that last putt, I also could ram his golf cart with him in it into a water hazard he could swim with the other turtles, or maybe knock him into a bunker. I looked at the registration and I realized I’m just a lowly department supervisor I can’t afford the $5,000 entrance fee. Gotta make sure the common folk don’t try and show up.

Associates fired and Marvin goes on a golf outing. Coincidence? I think not!

I hope Marvin enjoys his golf outing while the thousands he just laid off with out notice are now struggling to find a new job!

Of course just sending a check to the charity is out of the question. We need to fire up the corporate jet, burn thousands in payroll and fuel, and eat more than an average person in the world eats in a week.
Bad optics aside, it’s just f cking stupid.

Here's hoping dear old Marv gets hit by a golf ball, golf cart, or semi truck on his trip.

So So sorry for you and your dad. I hate that so many of us have been in these situations as a result of working at Lowe's. However, it is the price we pay when we have mortgages and car payments and family responsibilities that require our income. At my 11 plus years at Lowe's I have paid the price many times over with countless stories of demanding managers that make poor decisions. One of my least favorites was the time it was my 50th birthday and my wife and I had plans for a nice steak dinner. My coworker who was a mid decided to bail out on his departments freight that was still on the floor. So my closing manager that was looking for a promotion wanted the store to be absolutely perfect decided to make me stay and put up all the freight. So I missed my dinner and we drove around for an hour and a half looking for someplace that was open so we could eat anything out to try and celebrate. It didn't really work and I ended up having a terrible night. The manager got a promotion and moved on to another store. I still think of it often when I see the freight sitting on the floor at the end of the night on a regular basis. No body even cares. I hope you can make it up to your Dad on your next day off. I have complained about my work for years, but the truth is, I don't think the grass is greener somewhere else. Of course I have had other jobs and there has always been that bad manager somewhere. Lowe's does pay fairly well and has pretty good benefits, so I will stick it out until something major changes. Good Luck to all.

My manager was going on about how Marvin could come to visit this weekend. SM claimed he was in town. I said no he’s not he’s in Rochester NY at the Lowe’s golf classic.

Haha I’m nowhere near Rochester. Not even in the same state.

I interviewed at Lowe's in Charlotte recently. I asked about morale. The hiring manager danced around it, so I asked him if I could go to the coffee shop and talk to some employees on my own. He declined.

I shook his hand, thanked him for his time, and told him I didn't think I would be a good fit with his group. He asked why. I told him I currently work for a company with low morale and didn't want to move to the same environment. Maybe I'm an idealist and that type of company is dead.

I found the link to the event’s page, I agree with the post that it’s terrible optics to do something like this right after a mass firing, although the charity seems quite honorable it just looks terrible to do. Better watch out for your shell when poking your head out marv!

Marvin will probably meet OJ there too. They’re buddys because they share a similar sense of conscience.

seems to me your sm has the wrong priorites. would Marv really mind if you went and had a day with your dad. I would think not. what is it you have to do in the store that trumps the moments with your dad? I just wish I could spend one more day with mine before he passed. these times are too precious to lose I blame SM not marv. Marv Is doing what he has to to make the shareholders happy the only way he knows how. he might be right and he might be wrong we are not there to see the circumstances. its much like a court case judged in the media you never know the real workings behind the camera. and btw I was a seasonal worker that lost his job on the 31st.
