Relative let go mid-Apr, paid until end of may and received lump sum severance in mid June - NYS turned down unemployment - anyone receive unemployment in this scenario?

Stop lying this is not for a relative. Its for you who got let go. Why you lying for?
You or he/she will have to wait until last payment from former employer. You can apply without waiting for any one-time severance payment.
To get unemployment, you can't go to school, work, or take pay from any pensions/401ks. You must focus entirely on finding new work.
Also, makes sure you apply for the state you got layoff from and ONLY one state. For example: If you work in NJ and live in NY, apply for NJ. If you work in NY and live in NJ, apply for NY. If you work in both states and don't have an official work location except from home (WFH), then apply for residency state.
So “asking for a relative” right? This is an anonymous site. No one know it’s you asking for yourself dummy.
Run towards acceptance. Denial will only hold you back.
However many weeks severance they received, they have to wait that long from the date of separation to file for unemployment usually.
