Xerox's latest tech center, 600 jobs, coming to North Carolina

August 13, 2019 01:18 PM

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Xerox Corp. will open a North Carolina technology center employing about 600 people, passing up its current headquarters in Connecticut and former headquarters in downtown Rochester for a growing Southern tech cluster.

A North Carolina committee on Tuesday approved state and local incentives that could be worth more than $13 million to choose a site in the Raleigh suburb of Cary. State business recruiters said Xerox also considered its current and former headquarters in Norwalk, Connecticut, and Rochester.

Xerox plans to pay an average of $113,000 a year at its fourth North American tech center as it moves some executives to North Carolina and hires IT specialists locally.

Apple and Amazon last year considered but ultimately passed over the Raleigh area for big tech sites.

Forget your Centers of Excellence. We have been there done that. How about selling some equipment and services...…...and increasing revenue.

This move is to reduce costs. In Rochester there are a lot of senior IT people. Moving to NC you can bring in younger people at a lower cost while forcing out the senior ones since they will not want to move. Also the taxes in NC are lower than NY. Another savings for the company and employees.

This is a joke. 80% of this group was let go in Rochester while the 20% remaining were offered to relocate to Raleigh. What Xerox terms "a lift and shift". NO NEW JOBS. If they chose not to relocate, it was considered quitting (on own accord) and therefore no collection of severance and no unemployment benefits because Xerox offered a job in Raleigh to stay with the company. The positions moved to Raleigh were no guarantee of long-term employment with the company but possibly only a year position. Those that took the lift and shift job will more than likely be looking for another job outside of Xerox once they get down there because the job is NOT a guaranteed position.

Where is the "Chief Storyteller" on this - utterly transparent screwage happening before our eyes.

"Webster is one of our four Centers of Excellence in North America along with Palo Alto, Toronto and our new facility opening in Raleigh. We are exploring..." >>>> TRANSLATED >>>> "We are losing people at an alarming rate due to planned site exits - Dont believe it!!"

"...center as it moves some executives to North Carolina and hires IT specialists locally" >>>> TRANSLATED >>>> "We expect Raleigh regional talent to be lower cost than Rochester regional talent, and didn't realize the quality of the Rochester higher ed talent engine, nor the growing position of Rochester in the Digital economy"

Xerox no longer has a pension going forward, so that is out of the picture. Unless they form a new company under the holding company (highly likely) that has a pension (highly unlikely).

My wager is
1) XRX asks "would you move to NC?" to those it doesnt want anymore. Those saying "yes" will be IRIFed or offered NC employment at such a low rate they would have to refuse. This would then be deemed "voluntary resignation" according to the HR policy currently in force. Those saying "no" would be required to work in NC. Again, voluntary resignation and no severance. The point is to do whatever is necessary to get these "high paid underperformers" (IT staff in Webster) off the books.
2) XRX offers NC job and relocation to those it needs to keep an operation running. These will be under a new manager and these roles will exist until the new manager can take on the role, or source it, to acheive what Team Icahn thinks is affordable.
3) You won't hear much of the Webster "Centre of Excellence" as that is a construct to slow the staff hemmorage likely already underway until they can recruit NC "talent".
4) Many stars have to align for this to happen by year end, so those asked (or not asked) might have some wiggly space before anything is forced on you.

This is opinion. Unlike much of the good factual information on here please take with a grain of salt.

I would bet that $113k is fully loaded meaning salary + pension (if any) + medical insurance + dental insurance + term insurance ..... well you get the idea, anything they can throw in at no true out of pocket cost to them to make it look good.

I will also bet that engineering work in webster dries up as it gets redirected to NC.

Hypothesis: $113 includes benefits (total comp) and NC (“we never imagined a large Corp like Xerox could screw us over like this”) training kick-ins of $23k per hire. Makes these replacement jobs close to the going rate in Cary of 53k. All part of the XRX plan to save $$$ on employee salaries. By the time NC wakes up, Governor will be out of office.

Why did we choose Research Triangle Park as the location of the new Center of Excellence?
The Triangle is home to more than 250 technology companies and is one of the most renowned research areas in the U.S. Nearby are top research universities including Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and NC State University. It is a prime spot for our new location as we evolve into a digital-first company.
When will the site open?
We expect the lease to be signed by the end of August and hiring will begin in the coming weeks. The site is scheduled to officially open in January 2020.
Are other functions beyond parts of the Digital eXperience (XDX) team moving to North Carolina?
We plan to grow this new site to accommodate 600 employees. We are evaluating the opportunities this new center could provide now. We will keep you informed as decisions are made.
I am on the XDX team, and I am interested in relocating to this new site. How do I apply?
Employees who are interested in a position at the new site should look out for open job requisitions and talk to their manager about their interest in relocating. All qualified candidates will be considered.
What impact does the opening of this new site have on the Webster facility?
Webster is one of our four Centers of Excellence in North America along with Palo Alto, Toronto and our new facility opening in Raleigh. We are exploring investments in Webster including expanding our manufacturing capability for hardware as well as toner. We’re also working with state and local officials to identify ways to invest in and revitalize the overall campus

I wonder if the $113k salary is salary only, or if it includes the benefit load. If it includes benefits, it could be as low as $60k "cash value" so to speak.

  • Ghf: all intel so far on this site re: Raleigh (Cary) has been spot on. Are you refeeeing to XRX provides info? Yes, they have hidden much. A minor % of current IT workforce will be asked to go. The key message is to get rid of all y’all.

$113K there? That sounds really low for the jobs they are planning.

Notice they said 600 jobs not 600 new jobs. Step 1 is shift a large number of people from Rochester to Raleigh, probably at their current rate.

Say ‘adios’ to a bulk of the XDX employees currently located in 111 or 300.

It’s hard to believe the any of the information that is communicated is reliable or factual anymore. They’re planning on “employing about 600 people” at the Cary location. They will also be moving “some executives to North Carolina” and hire IT specialists locally”

Question is how many if any current Xerox IT specialists are being moved to Cary?
