Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Bumping the facts back up about Oxy and their track record in light of the continuing deserved decline of the company.

Re-posting to keep the facts out about Oxy since all you people could come up with was name calling and thumbs down (apparently Piper Alpha etc DIDN'T happen according to Oxy staff thumbing this down and despite the facts that can be easily researched in this post). Keeping it front and center for all those who want to know the facts about Oxy from Anadarko and anyone else thinking of applying to Oxy who doesn't have much background info on them. Still working on spreading the word on other formats and with those in O+G on my network. Convinced several people to turn down job offers with Oxy to date. Anyway, here are the facts based on direct experience -

Make sure you conform and there is nothing different about you compared to the gang already there. You'll be persecuted until you have to quit your job if you are different and the people doing it will tell you that you deserve it. Don't challenge anyone on anything ,you'll be run off. Recognize that almost all 'professional' staff are rejects from other more successful companies and you shouldn't have any problems setting appropriate levels of expectations. Keep your head down and don't make mistakes, other people will grab on to them to make themselves look good at your expense. Oxys 9/80 schedule is really a 9/89 - they will expect you in on your Friday off while making sure they get their bonus hours the other 9 days. It works out at roughly a 9% pay decrease for your hours worked. Don't take an overseas assignment (Oxy have failed everywhere, so that shouldn't be an issue) because you have to work 6 weeks on 1 week off rotation without seeing your family and if you don't like it, they will run you off. Don't expect professional development or support, you are expected to know everything all the time. They aren't wasting money on training and development. If you like persecuting others and helping HR to make your target pay for it, you will fit straight in at Oxy. Other than that, the low pay, no career prospects, track record of fatalities and serious EPA violations and school yard mentality, you should do very well.

Don't forget Piper Alpha, Petrolia, Maynas Carijano, Thunderball, 35R gas line explosion, North Dakota purchase and sale at $1billion loss, Tatweer petroleum, Libya, ALL south American calamities and their total lack of being able to retain ANY professional staff on any level.

One addition to this, as demonstrated by some on these boards, is the belief that workplace harassment, bullying and persecution of certain people for being different is NOT bigotry according to Oxy staff. They will defend that kind of behavior every time.

I'm currently on an Anadarko project being built in Colorado, and the guys are the worst clients I've ever had to work with. Rude little tattle tales crying to our bosses about the dumbest sh– possible.

@10zwnz8q-3nud ok, from that perspective Oxy max vacation hours is 536 hrs (240 annual vacation + 296 carryover).

Same environment at APC. Conform, say nothing. Rub someone the wrong way unintentionally and you’re gone if they know the right people. Everyone looks, dresses and acts the same way .... reminds me of a book we had to read in high school ....

“APC vacation max 400 hrs? Hmmm,,,it seems I have been missing out on 10 weeks PTO”

280 weeks max + 120 hours carryover = 400 hours.

It's a sh*thole company. Sure, be a Oxy cheerleader now, wait 5-10 years and you'll be crying a river about your poor choice. You'll have to learn for yourself.

I agree with 1skq... there hasn't been one representative from Oxy that has given me any hope that this is a good company to work for.. I see a bunch of bullies! It's the Oxy way or the highway.. at least when APC took over companies they did it in a methodical manner and really took the best of both companies... Despite what the HR reps said APC benefits are far superior then Oxy's. Oxy vacation max 296 hrs, APC 400, Oxy max retirement 12% after $132,900, APC 17% of total income, to just name a few... I walk away from an Oxy meeting and I feel like they are constantly justifying the deal and nothing regarding APC people. You can be #1 in everything but if you don't have quality people to manage those assets it does you no good and that's what's going to happen when you layoff more than 30% of the people. APC didn't have world class assets without the people.

Based on what I've seen from Oxy this first week, I'd say I have to agree. This is turning out to be an absolute debacle. Someday there will be business school case studies on how not to screw up an acquisition using this as an example.
