Thread regarding Norfolk Southern Corp. layoffs

Why are you still working for Norfolk Southern?

Going through posts here made me realize just how many people are utterly miserable working here. Which makes me wonder - if you are that unhappy, why in the world are you still here?

This is an honest question. If I was that unhappy here, I'd be gone by now. So what's keeping you here?

Coming from the view of a craft employee, it is a pretty good job. I always had a set schedule, may have been Tues/Weds off 2nd shift for a while, but it was steady, paid good money and was the most relaxing job I have ever had. I just came in, did my work, chatted with everyone and at the end of my shift threw my tools in my box and left without a thing to worry about. i also sell stuff on the side, so I always made my listings while I was there and could look on craigslist for deals to resell and whatnot. Cant say any of that about my new REAL job that only pays 2/3 the money and I have to work 5x harder at. Anyways, if they call I am going back and to anyone else that got laid off and is not gonna come back, best of luck to you out there. Use the laid off time to get a new skill that pays good. The only job security out there is having a skill that is in demand.

I was raised by Trainmasters and terminal superintendents that’s why I’m staying. I also like to dream one day about becoming the ceo of a class 1 railroad. And I still feel like I’m more important than everyone else even though I’m in a union and in reality if they do it to one of us they do it to all of us. But I look at myself as more of an independent contractor even though I pay $1000 a year on dues. I don’t look at others any differently who don’t have to pay to work where they work. Because I know in the long run I have a greater earning potential than a lot of people and a retirement if it’s still there. And if it gets really bad I know that I could win the lottery someday.

I for one would like to see $10 billion in net NS profits by 2024 while raising the health insurance for the crafts and providing meager wage increases that do not reflect cost of living, inflation or the increase in revenue to come after all carriers cut the conductor spot by 2024. Maybe even seeing the rrb go insolvent from the greed of the carriers?? It’s deju vu all over again. Then, I’ll be here to get rid of the one man crews and get all trains, over the road at least, run by computers and all yards that require big numbers to operate cut to about 15-25% of current operating ratios. Then I will be here to consolidate all the internal departments until everything that can be unmanned will be. Generally speaking I think this is an overall corporate goal for large companies, and small ones. But once the transportation industry does the technology will trickle down and really spread across to developed nations abroad. But, more specifically North America. And really if everyone would just come together and help this railroad achieve its’ goals, that would be great. Why resist? Why even complain? It’s over like an old man slowly entering a hot bath.

I’m here to help reduce the operating ratio to 24% after they get rid of conductors by 2024

I’m going to stay here long as possible and keep collecting my free money. Why would I leave a job that all I do is sit in the office and call people multiple times on the radio until they answer?

Most people don't like their jobs in general you dope! NS just has a forum to vent. If Walmart, 7-11, or any other company for that matter had a forum to vent on don't you think there would be comments? Your post is bar far and away the stupist one yet. They should lay you off for being just flat out dumb!
