RAs in IBM Research as soon as Friday November 8 2019

RAs in IBM Research as soon as Friday November 8 2019.

Just rumors and whispers so far. Hopefully won't happen, but here is a placeholder thread just in case.

Can anyone confirm hearing anything?

AT&T Outsourced it’s Tech Dev department and the Employee’s have a 1 year contract. I am wondering if IBM will extend our contract. AT&T paid their employees good money and I know IBM will probably cut our salary. Was wondering if we will let go after our year contract is up?

There is no "next big thing", electronics technology is in a maturation stage and a lot of technologists are getting out of engineering. The government may throw them a bone, but the heady days of the 1970's through 90's are gone with the wind. No one's spending money on research as existing technologies fill 99% of consumer needs.

Does that make it Schroedinger's lab?

IBM knows the labs are money pits, and incubators of the next “new thing”. As they transition from building HW, (big capital investment / big return) (dumping chips and Intel) to coding SW (LINUX) and managing services (Cloud) (smaller investment into resources that can easily move) they realize they have to harvest the Lab ideas. Both HW and SW/services. To do this IBM has been trying to spread the cost among other like minded businesses. As they spin off HW division, they are looking for a buyer who can leverage the IBM HW lab investment (yes there are a pile of ideas and sunk costs there). The investment in SW and services has been a much less capital investment but a more intensive personnel investment. Look for IBM’s going forward strategy to continue to pursue this. On the HW side who can benefit from the sunk IBM costs and has a track record of exploiting new ideas into viable products. That’s who IBM will partner with HW wise. On the SW/Services side who has exploited personnel ideas to build their business. That’s who IBM will just buy. IBM has shown their hand in both offerings. Cutting a 10 year deal with Global foundries to exploit sunk costs in chips, and just buying personnel (RedHat) for new mobile strategies

it is neither a boondoggle nor a money toilet. Also, it is definitely boondoggle and a money toilet. And both statements are true and false simultaneously.

IBM Research should deep freeze the quantum computing work, can't even figure out cloud computing, why whittle away precious capital while the mothership is sinking fast.

When have RAs ever stopped?

Heard Albany R&D managers submitted their MIS list last month. IBM would be better off selling it

That's a shame. After bell labs was gutted, research was the last great corporate lab left...now it's a shadow of its former self.

To be fair though, for all the amazing stuff that came out of there, there has been a complete failure to monetize it. Watson is the classic example.
