Thread regarding Norfolk Southern Corp. layoffs

Might be time to take our eyes away from layoffs and look at what the Carriers are proposing in contract negotiations

Railroaders may want to stop talking about these unfortunate layoffs and pay attention to what the Carriers have proposed for the next contract.

Big changes to work rules, healthcare, and they want us to concede pay as we are paid to much.

They also want to change retirement and they want to do away with crafts and just let the Managers assign us to whatever.

Things have only begun to get bad, the road ahead is going to be near impassable.

Any idea as to who would buy Juniata loco shop? Another railroad?

Striking will not help at all because no Union leader is willing to go to prison once we refuse to return to work and dont. My advice to anyone doing any type of program work IE: Juniata Loco Shop or Roanoke, go find a job now because within a year or so Roanoke will be closed and Juniata is getting bought out. Norfolk Southern is only concerned about moving freight. Once they get rid of those, mechanical forces are going to be skeleton at best because NS does not like the liability they pose. Between the injury ratio and bad order dwell time NS will be more than happy to do away with them. They'll just use salaried employees (bosses) to do that work. The end is very near.

The carriers have no say nor do the unions when it comes to Railroad Retirement. The only way it can be changed is an act of Congress. Hopefully there will be enough Democrats when the time comes somebody wants to change it because the amount of money in it is close to $30 billion dollars

it’s the perfect storm

  1. complete disarray everyone worrying about there job.
  2. car loadings low very low
  3. The right mo–n in office and yes he is a mo–n
  4. some union willing to take other crafts work I hate to say it but its true .

They will try very hard to get this new contract negotiations settled as fast as possible before the next election.

The last nail in the coffin will be our pension just like every other industrial pension they want to get rid of it

So it looks like the companies want single person crews and multi-craft in the shops.

At what point will all the unions stand together to help protect jobs, benefits and pay? The unions better wake up now, the more they shrink the workforce, the less money the unions will be seeing per month in the form of dues. For too many contracts now, the unions have just gone along with what the companies want and then told their members they better vote "Yes" for another poor contract. We need more than just another c-appy pay raise, when they also raise healthcare payments and decrease benefits. Do the union leaders realize they are just cutting their own throats, do they even care?

Imagine if you had perhaps 40%-50% less contributors to railroad retirement? That would mean major changes to the current structure of the system. And they won’t wait 20 years down the road when that well is running dry to implement changes in the number of credit months or age required in order to draw.

I do apologize, I read the part of the retirement out of context. They haven't proposed anything, just using it as propaganda that we are compensated more than fairly.

A large reason why this is possible is because of the current Clown in the Oval Office. Shame on union members who voted against their own interests.

Just a common craft employee, but this is what they are coming to the table with.

Looks like the carriers are headstrong against age old work rules and how the retirement is on their end.

I am no lawyer, and guess my reading comprehension isn't as good as yours.

Not sure where you heard this, because we have already been told the railroads are not going to negotiate any work rule changes.

As far as healthcare and pay, continue to vote no on the contracts until all options have expired, then prepare to strike. Everyone will also need to vote pro railroad worker candidates into office in the 2020 elections. If the current administration stays in office, then be prepared to pay more for health insurance while taking substantiation pay cuts.
