Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Outsider perspective

I have been at Honeywell Aero for 3 years. Worked for 2 prior companies. My manager is ok, nothing outstanding. I see about a third of the engineers taking it easy and basically avoiding extra work. The manager seems fine with this as long as they come by and chit chat and play the buddy game. Meanwhile myself and others on the team work extra hard. At my prior company there is no way the slackers would be able to get away with it. I don't think my manager understands the work or who is working hard. Some of these guys are not that old.

OP here. well, the advice is somewhat shocking but makes sense. Slack the minimum to achieve a 5 block, enjoy life, or get the heck out. Thanks!

When I first joined I worked crazy hours and busted my butt....for several years. However not an effective player of office politics. Never more than a block 5 rating and now that is what they will get
from me regarding performance.

Managers that are "in" are yes men and have very little knowledge what people do. Just never say no, delegate and run, push people, ask for dates. Some good older, experienced managers I see get pushed around, dumped on, and sadly rid targets. We are a software company run by WS bankers.

Only 3 years working for Honeywell? My best advice is to leave. This company will not allow you to develop in your career field, and this is because of outsource to India and Puerto Rico. The only reason this company has to have someone from mainland USA is because of certain export control regulations.

Sadly this is how it works at Honeywell. It took me nearly a decade to figure it out. If you work hard, you get worked harder. You end up the "go to" person for important projects with impossible deadlines because these are the people management leans on when things need to get done. The hard workers are expected to do more than their fair share and once management knows what you are capable of it's too late, you set an expectation and you will be held to that. And that's all well and good if they compensated you fairly but you'll find your raise to be only slightly more than your peers who are usually worthless in comparison. I have found it much easier to work just as hard as the others in my group. The harder I used to work the more angry, frustrated, and p-ss-d off I would be. It was really hard not to focus on the disproportionate workload I was taking on. After getting passed up on promotions I gave up, took a lateral position at another site and made sure I put in no more than a block 5 effort from then on. Much happier now. Good luck!

This is how it works at UOP in Des Plains thankfully. When I do show up to the office and I’m not out flying to some conference or “customer meeting” (I.e banging the local talent, drinking scotch and playing golf on my T&E card), I’m shooting the sh– with the VPs thinking of c-ap I can make my sales support and engineering group do, like a revised schedule A or Strap Plan! Sh– rolls down hill as they say....
