Yeah, entire CPU team shutting down.
Worst place to work- lots of politics which is making them to go down.
the id–ts who think this is fake news should realize that 300 CPU designers were told to not bothered to come back to work on Monday. Resumes are flying around like confettis and people we haven’t heard from in ages started to try to connect in Linkin.
Taken over 4yrs for Samsung to realize and do the same as QC on custom CPU. It's definitely long overdue and tons of $ wasted plus hurting their phone biz.
I know this is gonna happen. The Korean are not stupid to allow the SARC leadership to waste money forever.
This news is absolutely true. Why are you trying to protect this news from going out. Seems like you are from upper management or HR trying to save company image or your image?. CPU division is getting closed because of poor design, stupid politics and nepotism played by upper management. Nobody actually worked all they did oh we are close to defeating Apple but the truth was the product was sh–. Samsung is going forward with ARM cores. People working there are already reaching out to other companies
If Samsung's in-house designed core can not beat ARM designed core, such as A77, why would you keep a CPU design engineer team? They had their chance and they screw up. Apple still keep its CPU design team because their core is better than ARM's core.
I don't work for Samsung, but come on - how stupid can you be if you think the entire location will be shut down in just one day and everyone gets cut. Samsung is a big company with a great reputation. Also, they are trying to get into the 5G wireless market in USA with Verizon. Do you think they are going to leave Austin TX when all these big companies are not locating themselves in TX? Many companies - especially in R&D make strategic decisions based on what the customer needs are and where the R&D team is based on project development. If the customer demand is not their then projects get cancelled and the talent gets moved onto other projects. Sure, there are cuts, but Samsung is a growing company especially when it's trying to win market share. Find out the facts and then think it through. Stop posting nonsense that doesn't even make sense. You're all engineers, you should know how to think logically.
Same here, it's not closing... There will be changes to SARC and that's it. Nobody has the info for now...
On SARC, for all the folks that are new here (I know that this link was featured on Qualcomm's board):
The Samsung Austin R&D Center (SARC) was founded in 2010 to develop high-performance, low-power, complex CPU and System IP (Coherent Interconnect and memory controller) architectures and designs for Samsung’s System LSI division. The San Jose Advanced Computing Lab (ACL) was opened in 2017 and GPU IP (leveraging 5 years initial development from another division) was added to the joint charter. The engineering team has extensive experience and a broad background in the development of advanced CPU & GPU designs and System IP for various market segments. The management team has extensive experience building world-class teams, fostering an outstanding work environment and enabling creativity.
Totally not credible
Samsung Austin Semiconductor, the Foundry/Mfg plant, is not laying off nor shutting it's doors. The Foundry portion of the business is going strong and is healthy. Understand a project for SARC was cancelled, and therefore layoff rumors are rampant. However, not sure anyone at SARC really knows yet what is happening there and what the future holds.
I got pinged about this today. I left in 2018, I'd say this is accurate as I heard it from two different sources. It may be a partial hit though.
Anyhow, good luck to all of you over there.
KH must be bummed at how this is being handled.
I heard it from two of my friends in two different teams. They were called in the meeting and asked to looking for new job.
Um, no, this is not true
Def not credible
I know my bro in law got the notice....
WTF..is this credible? thats a lot of engineers..
