Thread regarding Lowe's Cos. layoffs

well, it happened to me

Walked into work and was told my position is being downsized because we now have self checkouts. I was a maxed out Head Cashier. I got the "you're welcome to apply for other positions" BS. This came with no warming.

This is absolutely not true. There was zero job elimination due to self checkout and zero downsizing of head cashiers.

tenure can also be nothing more than years worked. the new people may actually have more skill or experience in the position (from other companies) or positions that will cross train well to other areas of the store. for all we know they weighed any write ups, red boxes, call offs etc. too. maybe you clash with other people terribly and its come back to bite you in this game of "survivor". a lot we dont know and assuming it all came down to pay can be very short sided. as the other person stated....a typical gripe is that they actually start these new people at higher rates...so you may not have even been the highest paid despite your years....or it could have been pretty negligible.

My store doesn’t have self checkouts anymore. We used to have them before Carvin Marvin arrived but they were taken out about 2 years ago; too much theft. Right now they are sitting on pallets in top stock in receiving.

Hmmm…one of the biggest complaints from tenured employees (and you would know this if you’re familiar with this site and a couple of similar sites) is that the new employees usually end up making just as much if not more than the people who’ve been with the company longer and end up having to train these newbies.

I love self checkout because I can figure what I want to pay for and want for free

All Stores do not have self checkouts. I am in Texas and we have only had self checkouts for about two weeks. Its because I was maxed out and I am at a 2 full time and 2 part time head cashier store, and the other head cashiers have been there for about six months. Its all about paying people less.

Don’t all stores have self checkout? The self checkout registers also require a Cashier to be present and these Cashiers require Head Cashiers to ensure coverage and to stay on top of the breaks and lunch schedule.

Which state are you in? Something about your story doesn’t seem to make sense.
