Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM and Oracle are so far behind in the cloud, they might stop trying to compete with Amazon altogether and go a different route, analyst says

'I don't think IBM and Oracle will get that much bigger'

Indeed, I'm sure we will get smaller, much smaller.

There is a point in HW where you can’t catch up. Mainframe customers know that and have practiced it for years. If an old mainframe customer bought Z15’s today, that doesn’t gain them the advantage of Z15’s due to everything else in their support structure being focused around their previous experience. It’s exactly the same for cloud. Once you fall far enough behind you cannot catch up. I’m afraid IBM is there, and they either have to carve out a unique niche, or find something else to invest in.

As if Red Hat is really going to make a difference. I just see hoards of people jumping to Red Hat...NOT.

Well DUH. When IBM walked away from the Intel market, Amazon and Google cloud got put on steroids. Microsoft was already on their way due to exploiting their SW. IBM is left trying to adapt their proprietary Architecture (HW and SW wise) to the cloud marketplace. Why do you think they bought Redhat. It opens up their proprietary offerings to the marketplace including Intel
