Unemployment

When can we or should we apply for benefits? Termination date? Last day of severance or immediately? I’d appreciate any help with this question.

In Florida, and after my last layoff with another company that I received a package with I applied for unemployment right away and got benefits regardless if I got a package or not. There was no "waiting" for severance to end. It ends when they send you that check in my opinion. If they aren't paying you bi-weekly until your severance is depleted then you should be able to apply when you get your check. Maybe it's changed in the last 15 years, but I got unemployment right away.

I’m in WI. Termination day was 10/16. Filed for unemployment starting 10/27. My unemployment is still pending. Received severance on 11/15 for 21 years of service. So on 11/17 I claimed my severance. Will this screw me for collecting any unemployment?

Learned from experience. Unemployment is not immediately available if you received a severance. Contact your unemployment office in your state as laws may/could vary.

For the person in New York, you have to apply for unemployment after your severance ends. So if you receive four weeks of severance, you then apply for unemployment after your last severance check. They denied you because you said you received a severance. You can get the benefits after you’re done collecting that.

On the day after your official termination date go to your state's unemployment compensation website. They will ask about your final date of employment and any compensation you might receive post that date. They will then calculate your benefit and when they can begin. This is ghe process in Minnesota; the process in your state may differ.
