Really bad idea to access lots of files that would be helpful to you at a new company. This can leave a log that can be found and used as evidence against you. I find it striking that tech folks do not understand the digital information produced when you access information. I knew a guy who left a startup but downloaded massive amounts of code before he left. Not that I knew about this. Anyway he was found out and was lucky not to end up in jail. He was a "smart" guy too, or so I had thought. This story seems to be similar. Yes, this act can be illegal but it is also really stupid.
These guys probably didn't get a raise for 5 years, while the ELT is earning enormous compensation packages.

Those 3 guys stole all the collaboration secrets and took them to Poly. No wonder the collab BU is "dying" and all employees in the US in that org will be LR'ed
