Thread regarding Lowe's Cos. layoffs

Customer Service?

Every day our manager berates us about pushing customers to sign up for a Lowes Credit Card.
My store is not in an urban area, but fairly close and many of our customers are not that well off and another credit card at 29% interest rate is not really in their best interest.

Today an elderly couple came in for a new after theirs had been damaged by a neighbor trying to get in. You knew right away that they did not have the funds for anything fancy or even for installation. Long story short - I got them a door that would do the job and offered to install it for FREE on my own time as a Christmas present.

They left very happy and with the woman giving me a hug and crying for how helpful I was.

Now the manager of the store was watching this - called me into the back and instead of saying that is real customer service and shaking my hand for my generosity. But no - he laid into me for getting them a less expensive door and not asking them about a credit card.

When he was done - I took off my vest, handed it to him and said goodbye.

As soon as I hit send here, I will be writing a letter to corporate and the local newspaper about the incident. I have the elderly couple and a few customers and CSA's that are wiling to back the story.

So Lowes - and Brian - FU

Rewind 2.5 years and that would be a red vest moment worthy of corporate praise. It's clear the company does not know what it wants to be.

because of the people that think this is a type a infraction and not something that more people should be doing is the reason i got my a– out the door.

itas also the reason that lowes is losing business left and right.

More power to you sir! Not everything in life is dollars and cents. Going out of your way for someone is something we all should be doing.

I hope your local paper makes your ex store and brian look like the scrooges and aholes they are

You were likely going to be fired for the install anyway.

Truth is it is not up to you to decide if a customer should use a credit card or not. Your job is to sell them the product they need. As long as you don't lie to them about the credit cards, it is up to them if they can afford it.

Maybe a person wants the extra 5%. Maybe they want the card to take advantage of a no interest promo. Maybe a customer really wants a better product now, but doesn't have cash on hand yet. Maybe a customer just wants to keep the card on hand for emergencies if they need a new fridge one day. Stop acting like you know better than your customers and let them decide, your job is to offer.

Also, by doing an install yourself you open the company up to a potentially huge a liability. One time we had someone delivery an item to a customers house themselves. They allegedly scratched their floor when delivering. Customer got over 6 grand from the store., not from the associate. And you all wonder why you can't make bonus in your store.

I only use a credit card to not use cash. My wife pays off the balance each month.

I agree, pushing credit as a way to pay for something you can't afford is a losing proposition.

But Lowe's new lease plan is worse. Sure, it gets sales today, but later, when they're paying a 50% penalty, they won't be able to buy anything and will be stealing like everyone else.

Installing it yourself is a class A infraction. I wouldn’t be surprised if Brian would fire you for that

You are the kind of Associate and that was the kind of deed that would make those Corporate videos. You know, the ones where you choke back the tears???! I’m so sorry this happened to you, but man, I gotta say that you handled that well. Wishing the very best to you in all future endeavors!

Good on ya.

That is the sort of Lowe's customer service employee I was trained and encouraged to be when I joined the company just after the turn of the century. Get the customer what they need by use of a good conversation and listening to them, and then (maybe) offer our extras.
