Bah. Target had zero Internet presence in 2007, and turned it into an Internet juggernaut. Ditto Walmart when Eddie took over. Sears had warehouses all over the country and did exactly squat with it, not only refusing to invest a dime, but transferring property into his own hands, and forcing Sears to pay higher rents and higher interest by making it borrow from his companies. The fault lies with no one but Eddie, who deliberately transferred Sears' wealth against everyone's interests, in conflict with his duties as a board member, criminally breaching his duties through self-dealing to his own benefit.
Eddie certainly took one downtrending yet still profitable company and injected it with Kmart poison. He had already started to raid Kmart’s real estate assets when he bought them for pennies out of bankruptcy. Then he swindled a weak Sears CEO Alan Lacey, along with a money hungry Board, out of Sears so he could create his “holdings” company/real estate portfolio. For the first few years, he micromanaged the business trying to run a retailer like a hedge fund. No capital investment in stores. Putting department against department for scarce resources. When he realized his sad attempt at building a powerful retail company was a total failure, he systematically picked apart both companies and sold off every asset possible. But I still blame Alan Lacey and the Sears Board for letting Eddie take the company.
