I truly believe Mattel cares more about having a news outlet like Fast Company or Wired write a puff piece about their new toy then they actually care about how much kids want to own it. Chase social media impressions over sales at your own peril.
Product or more importantly play led turn around is needed... When Barbie innovated paper dolls it wasn't done because it would make a nice headline it was a great product because it was more fun, better play. When Hot Wheels were made to go faster to get round a loop and do something that kids would think was cool and make a great TV moment - nobody was thinking about the PR - they were thinking wow this could be really fun for kids. Marketing is all about creating markets by creating perceived needs - and both of these "innovations" built markets.
