Thread regarding Sears layoffs

51/45 Moneywise seems to have the numbers, link in message

  1. Sears

Stores closing in 2020: 51

Sears is more than 130 years old — and is dying a slow death.

The iconic chain was once the largest retailer in the country, and it played a key role in the rise of shopping malls.

Its innovative mail-order catalogue forever changed the way people shop. The next time you order a rug or a refrigerator, you’ll have Sears to thank.

The company emerged from bankruptcy in 2019, but not looking any stronger. The months since have seen one round of store closings after another. Dozens more will be shutting down by February 2020.

The chain's current owner says in a statement that it's "pruning operations that have struggled due to increased competition and other factors."

  1. Kmart

Stores closing in 2020: 45

The home of the Blue Light Special first opened under the name Kmart in 1962. The discount chain had almost 2,500 locations worldwide in 1994, but the retailer closed hundreds when it filed for bankruptcy in 2002.

Two years later, Kmart merged with Sears. And that's when things really started going bad.

The lights have steadily been going out at Kmart stores in recent years. Dozens have shut down in 2019. Nearly 50 more will close by February 2020.

And that will leave just 182 Sears and Kmart stores still in business. Transformco, the company that now owns the two chains, says the business has faced "a difficult retail environment and other challenges."

@1kyy said “if there’s another big list coming any time soon” for a reason, genius

@1meg Then where is it? I seriously doubt there will be one put up TODAY. Roughly Noon in Chicago now. When should we expect this vaunted list, my friend? There won't be one until February, that's why.

Old news, yes. But the two most recent big closure lists (August and November) have been announced at the end of the week before a long weekend, and the August closures have wrapped up, so I can’t really fault anyone who thinks another list is coming soon.

The August list was at the end of the month, right before Labor Day weekend, and the November list was announced at the end of the week before Veterans Day, which happened to fall on a Monday last year. There’s something of a pattern there. I’m not sure why Sears still thinks dumping bad news on the Friday before a long weekend is worth anything because the internet has mostly ended that way to bury bad news.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is Monday, so we have another long weekend coming up. If there’s another big list coming any time soon, I suspect we’ll see it very soon now that the August closures have wrapped up.

Those numbers don't reflect the almost weekly store closings which were not on that list.

Kmart will be retired in the US in 2020, leaving PR and Guam to support the brand, and Sears will look to pull out of as many malls as possible to focus on the smaller format that Sweetie loves.

it's I miss popcorn, because popcorn had good info, sorry that I missed the 182 left, I saw 51/45 in 2020 and I posted. 66 stores in the last wave is still possible and that's what I said is my opinion of what's happening. I also said SEEMS to have the numbers, I have never said anything is concrete.

45 is the exactly number of Kmarts left in the states...seems like it is true, then. Kmart is done this year.
