Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

1-1 invites are being sent

I am the best performer but I just received a 1-1 scheduled on 25th. Should I be worried?

Just Hide - this is so funny!!!! Could have been an episode of “the Office” hahaha

“Don't accept appointment, try and re-schedule for the next day with a good excuse.
If they refuse and insist on the meeting then you are probably toast.
If you are too stressed out, get stress leave on Monday, call in sick and disable voice mail on cell....probably unethical but what the hell...“

@4rpo+13C9fEu3 I would send that email right to Fran and ask what’s up? Did you forget to tell me something? Why am I learning about my LR from Fidelity? M sure heads would roll in HR

No one, including your manager, is going to care if you take a day. Your severance package was already prepared. They've calculated the number of hours of unused PTO you have, and will tell you how much you're being paid as part of your severance. Take the day. If you get LR'd, you got an extra day off from Cisco. If you don't get LR'd, you wasted a day of your PTO, but you got to get out of the office and not have to deal with people looking at you like you're a dead man walking.

Feb 26th is my birthday and am entitled to take that day off. I don't think they will LR me on my b-day.

Wake up and smell the coffee! Cisco and HR does NOT care about you or your birthday. Take the day off and enjoy it. You can expect a call from your manager because s/he is required to make contact with you within a set period of time to read the HR script to you.

I got my LR notice 2 days after my birthday. Then I received my boiler plate message 4 days later thanking me for my years of service and in recognition of all that I'd contributed to Cisco, I could claim my "gift" for my # year service anniversary.

How does not accepting 1:1 help? If you are on the list you will be removed eventally right ?

It's not a question of eventually. You'll be let go regardless. But if your manager is willing to reschedule to a couple of days later, then you don't have to worry. If s/he will only reschedule for a different time on the same day or refuses to reschedule, you're being LR'd. It's really only a way to test the waters.

As someone replied, s/he got a txt message from their manager to call them while on PTO. I know a person who had to call his manager while on PTO back in '16, although that manager really hated to have to read that script. Whether or not s/he stuck to that script, we won't say to protect a decent person who was put in a difficult place.

Yes, not a good sign for you. It IS really more about cost vs. performance, seen it MANY times now. If you are a good performer you will do well, don't sweat it too much.

I got laid off in 2016. Our manager scheduled 1 on 1's for the entire group on a Tuesday for the following Thursday. This was to notify everybody of whether they were being laid off or not. @3uyi+13C9fEu3 , my manager told me that the decisions to be laid off were made by the VP or our respective organization. He did not know till Wednesday night who was being laid off in his group. Just out of curiosity, were you 50+ years of age at the time?

It's more about cost than performance. Cisco would rather have sub par performance and save a dollar so if you do well and get raises you are becoming more of a target.

In my case when I got laidoff in 2016, my very good manager grabbed off seat impormptu for a 1on1...discussed about my career goals etc..I felt very awkward like what the hell all of a sudden happened to him..hi was having a little cough and e asked me to leave for home and work from home......the moment i came out of meeting room i knew it was my turn..next day i got a 1on1 invite for early morning like 9 am. but since he already gave me a hint already i was not that surprised...he was a nice person and tried hard to get me a job internally later but was not able to...dont ask me why he laid off me then...he was not responsible...sh– happens

A 1 on 1 might not be a bad thing. Last year I had a boss who scheduled 1 on 1s without telling us what was going on, but it ended up being her just communicating to us that a restructure was happening and that we were going to new teams. About a month or so later there were layoffs for half of our original team. I would still be cautious even if this isnt a layoff right now. Sometimes shuffling happens beforehand. Always keep your resume up to date. If you get laid off, you get laid off. There's nothing worrying about it can do. Just keep looking ahead. Sometimes an end of one thing is an opportunity for new and better things.

Don’t recall an LR meeting that was sent out days in advance. They send you the meeting notice the night before.

very good advice! if you are 40+, be worried does not matter your position or pay rate.. HR tell managers nowadays purpose mix bad 1x1 with the other 1X1, to make it sound good.. or to game the legal system.. get resume out and start looking .. the past people was in the same dream of "I am a good performer" "I am the one of the critical of the team" ," I have been very loyal to Cisco" " we are one family slogan" don't be fooled by yourself, Cisco does NOT care about you..

YOU ARE JUST. a number!

I think it’s the difference between a m—acre and disappearances. We used to take out a few thousand people, line ‘em up over the pits and shoot them. Now, we do the Stalin method, take out a few people in the middle of the night, every night, never to be seen again.
I sort of prefer the first method, at least there was some transparency.
But this constant drip, drip is terrible because you just never know if it’s happening, it’s over, it’s coming or it’s all rumor.

Top performers were let go in my organization. Only family & friends were safe from layoffs.

The fact that you think you're the best performer indicates that probably this is a mtg to confide in you the change or reorg thats to follow. Not to worry.

Usually the 1:1 is set the previous day. Not the week prior, its mean to slow roast like that. Chill.

I'd be leery. Brace for impact.

Just know this if it happens, your NEXT job will likely give you much higher comp and without the CONSTANT fear of layoffs. Your stress level will go down.

Keep you chin up and NEVER give up! A "lemons to lemonade" scenario is in effect to all affected. The job market with better companies is really strong!

God Bless!

Unless you are a VP or SVP earning the big bucks, Cisco is a complete waste of time for anyone with marketable skills.

Is it for first thing in the morning? I'd be worried.

Are you 40+ years old? I'd be worried.

Ask your manager what topics s/he intends to discuss so that you can be better prepared to speak to those performance topics. If s/he doesn't respond, or is vague, I'd be worried.

Look at your manager's calendar. Are there any private meetings blocked off recently or any for tomorrow/Monday? If so, those are probably HR training sessions for them to be told what they can and cannot say to you when giving you your package. Be worried.

Are there other people with 1-1 invites on the 25th? Did everyone get a team meeting invite for later that afternoon, but you didn't? Are any of your meetings getting cancelled or rescheduled? Be worried.

Managers who are not letting people go should be telling people when they're scheduling a 1-1 right now not to worry. It was nice knowing you.

Post a follow-up on Tue and let us know if it was bad news, or if someone else is getting let go and all their stuff is getting dumped on you. Who knows, it could actually be good news for you. You now get to do the work of 2+ people for the same pay. :-)
