Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Google map of remaining Sears and Kmart stores, post-February 2020. Is it accurate?

I no longer remember where, but somewhere I found a link to this Google map, which claims to list all of the Sears and Kmart stores that will still be open after the current round of liquidations wraps up next month.

The map legend says

"These will be the last 59 Kmart stores and 128 Sears stores as of February 2020. This map was updated on 11/19/2019."

but I think some updates were made after that, as it actually shows only 56 Kmarts and 109 Sears.

Is the map accurate? If someone here made the map, can you step forward and comment on it?

@7Mptg+13fSKJWL You're bumping a thread from 2020, first of all.
Secondly, your map has no Sears, so it's not complete. Thirdly, the thread you bumped, refers to D&D retail's map, which IS completely accurate. Fourth, even if you were doing just Kmart maps, there is another user here who has maintained the only-Kmart map since 2019, which includes PR, USVI, etc.. So you didn't make anything, buddy.

The map is actively maintained and is accurate today, showing the remaining 28 full-sized Sears and 20 Kmart stores. Brooklyn is shown just once, as a Sears, because you can't really put two markers in the exact same spot on a map.

What's most notable now is how many closures have happened over the past 18 months. We've gone from 128 full-sized Sears stores (in November 2019) to just 28, meaning 100 have closed. And from 59 Kmarts to 20, meaning 39 have closed.

I made a more accurate map with all the locations excluding Puerto Rico and the USVI which have quite a few as well.

Agree that this list is excellent, but there is one Kmart missing from this list. In 2017, a Kmart was opened in the basement of a legacy Sears store in Flatbush, Brooklyn. It’s a small Kmart, but a Kmart nonetheless, with separate registers, separate (Kmart) decor and separate employees (in Kmart shirts.). It also has its own Kmart store number.

Yes it is accurate. The 56 Kmarts listed are the only ones not closed or closing, as of now.

There's actually 57 Kmarts operating on the mainland, Guam, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands. There's a Kmart in Brooklyn inside a full-line Sears that continues to be omitted from lists on here.

Beautiful map. I wish I Knew who made it. And it is recently UPDATED, as it accurately reflects the closing of the PR Kmart from 2 Weeks ago, taking us down to 56 remaining stores. Excellent job, to whoever did it!

@1knl+13fSKJWL maybe you are talking about Hometown stores? I believe this map shows only full-line Sears stores.

Yes, Wind Gap is set to close in mid-March. It's a shame what's happened with the company (and Sears). I recall going to the East Stroudsburg K weekly as a kid in the 1980s. We enjoyed going to the WG location; there is no Wal-Mart in the near vicinity, which I thought would help it stay until the very end. However, the lease was up and the owner had a buyer for the property. If there's no announcement of Walnutport closing by mid-March, I guess we will check that one out. It looks like a nice store, based on a store-tour video that's been posted.

Can someone explain to me why New Mexico, with a population of about 2 million people, has twice as many Kmart stores as Texas, which has almost 40 million? Or why North freaking Dakota, a tiny state which has about 700,000 people still has 1 Kmart, as does Montana, but far larger states like Ohio, Georgia, etc., don't? As someone stated a while ago, it really looks like someone blindfolded just threw darts at a map, when deciding which stores to keep open for now.

@1qgp+13fSKJWL Oh, sorry, the yellow ones are with pharmacies. Not particularly important, but I thought some people might want to see that. It was my first google map, I'm still Learning the intricacies, so I didn't Know how to post a legend.

@1rze+13fSKJWL Be that as it may, when a store is announced, I remove it from the list. They usually take about 2 Months to close after being announced, but I remove it from my map/list right away, as my list is of go-forward stores. You are correct, that Wind Gap Kmart hasn't yet closed yet, they are still in the "hospice" phase, but it will be a moot point in about 1 Month. It's moribund.

@jum+13fSKJWL, what do the different color pushpins (blue vs yellow) mean? I cannot find the legend part of your map that would explain this.

Wind Gap isn't deceased until March 16th (unless it changes), keep that in mind

Oh, never mind, 1 of my gripes (mentioned in my below post) was easily solvable. Duh, silly me! If I want to see only Kmarts, for example, I just unclick the little box next to the Sears lists, then it just shows the Kmart locations, or vice versa if I want to see only Sears. Again, whoever made this map, it's amazing, and was actually done better than mine was. Thank you.

Wow, I must Say, this map is accurate and amazing (as far as the Kmarts go, I am not that familiar with Sears). It's actually better than my map. I only wish he separated the Kmart and Sears maps, as it makes it a bit confusing, and actually organized the list to the left of his map, by state, as it's a bit confusing to go through. But those are minor gripes, I think he (or she) did a good job, whoever this was. Here is my map, for the record, along with my list. Sadly, I haven't been able to eliminate any stores for Weeks, now. Hopefully soon. Anyway, here is mine:
