I have seen them run off contractors time and time again it seems they are all crackheads or show up drunk.

If injury claims paid are factored in, contractors may be cheaper. They may make more, but one mistake/claim and they may be out of business. Guess they can file bankruptcy, rename/start a new business and go again. Are all contractors/suppliers in-laws, relatives, good ole buddies, etc?

Contractors fees may not be cheaper but in the end they are cheaper because they are not a liability, nor do they get benefits of any sort from the company, retirement/pension/vacation etc. ...so in the grand overall scheme they are cheaper.

It is a misconception that "contractors" are cheaper. If this was actually true UP would've switched decades ago. Csx had to take 2 of their shops from contractors because it did not work out

I’ve yet to see or hear of any full scale buyouts for crafts other then the vacation buyouts to get those retiring or quitting within the next few months and even then that’s not going to put a dent in the number of people they need to lay-off
