Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Has anyone requested to be laid off?

I am actively searching for a new job and was wondering if anyone had experience with asking to be laid off during a time like this so maybe someone that wants to leave can versus someone who really wants to stay. I’m thinking if I take this other job I’m interviewing for I may ask for this before the March lay-off. Thought?

I was getting nit picked by my manager over the Indians and the phone calls I was having with them. I did claims and they were the most irritating calls. I was trying to train them into doing claims the right way. Instead of sending the claims to their Coders to fix, they were just sending in all the info again with med recs. Again, the claim would deny. After the recon and two appeal levels, the providers and hospitals wouldn't get paid. I tried to train the 3rd parties how to bill because it was frustrating. Well, I guess it came out in my tone once or twice and they complained about me. It probably was a QA call by the Indians. Anyway, my boss talked to me about it and I said to her, instead of all the back and forth with HR, why don't you just lay me off. I am tired of the c-ap. At that point I was taking 50 - 80 calls per day on the provider line and most were 3rd parties. It wears on you. She called HR and they laid me off. I didn't get severance though and all benefits were cut. So know that if you ask to be laid off. I would wait until you get the answer from your other job and then give two weeks notice. They won't keep you that long anyway. No one is guaranteed severance. They can find ways to not give it to you. If they lay you off and you are a higher level, then you prob will get severance. Do it the smart way. I know it is frustrating, but do it right so your income is not interrupted. By the way, I am using the time off to go back to school and do my house over. My bathroom is almost done. In a few weeks when I am done with school, I will be ready for my next job and have some rooms in my house redone. Take advantage of the time off!! I still look for jobs and at least am aware of the market out there and who is hiring, etc.. Best of luck to you!!

I worked at UHG for 30+ years, getting laid off as a SG 30. Any decent manager / director gladly considered informal ‘volunteers’. But bad managers were too stupid or too short-sighted to play along. At this point, I wouldn’t trust anyone to ‘do the right thing’.

Trying to get us down is a waste of time. Because we’re happy.

If you’re making 45-50k year, a snack train is helpful

Dont invest in your employees. Just pay them with a snack train–capt crunch, chex mix, and peanuts that will definitely be an incentive. as youre laid off think about that the snack train. thank you for helping the execs maximize their profit so they can retire sooner.

It is not unheard of for companies to have voluntary layoffs....optum just doesnt do it.

If you asked her for a sign up sheet, then guess what? She probably put you on it and you don’t know yet.

Half baked plan? They screwed everyone and why is that so unthinkable? It’s actually helping someone on my team that may get laid off that has nothing lined up. I have moved up as far as I want within this company. I started as a 26 and I am now a 29 and totally done with waiting for my job to phase out. I appreciate your response. Very helpful.

If you spent as much time working hard as you do trying to concoct a half baked plan you might actually get promoted or move up in the world.

I am just screwed. I find out this week if I passed my last interview and if I got the job. If I do I will quit after bonus time and have 1 year to pay off the 10k. I’ll put the c-appy bonus toward that which won’t be anywhere near enough. I was thinking if I asked to be laid off vs someone else on the team that way at least I would get my school paid off but are they that nice to offer that? Probably not. I figured if I am leaving I may as well try and wanted to see if anyone has had luck.

LOYAL??? I guess I left out that if I leave I owe 10k in school bills that they paid and I can’t leave for 2 years BUT if I get laid off it’s paid for. Duh. I’m not that big of a hero.

What exactly is a team player ? Is that a corporate brown n’oser. It’s your life. Your driving the bus. Stop being so loyal and bail.

Why are you so loyal to the company? Why have such patriotic and dedicated emotions to a company? Do you own the company? Are you an officer? Or just an employee. You clock in, you clock out. You work the best of your ability under the current circumstances than you go home. That's it. You owe them nothing because they can get rid you with or without any reason. That's the US. Leave on your terms bro.

Keep working hard. It's all about hard work and buying things. hard work=results and prestige. The company has your back. The laws on the books are very favorable to employees. Keep showing up early, leaving late, unpaid overtime, and think that the $15 chain restaurant gift card will be a nice way of showing thank you to the employees.

I agree that UHG/Optum will shun you if you indicated that you are “not on their team”. Never mind the fact that they are certainly not on your team.

I’d also be afraid that they would somehow cheat you out of a severance since the separation was not strictly involuntarily. Not worth it in my opinion.

I think this depends. If you have a strong relationship with your manager and know layoffs are coming, you could ease their burden and someone else’s. If not it’s risky to burn bridges, and be seen as unengaged, unloyal etc.

Just keep looking for a new job so you can leave on your own terms. They'll made your life miserable if they find out that you're looking to leave. If you happen to be in the next layoff wave, then it was meant to be.

They won’t lay you off, they prefer attrition over laying off. Attrition is people moving on and not filling the job or closing open reqs before they are filled. If an area can make their 10% via attrition, that is preferred. You’ll shoot yourself in the foot b/c then your life will be made more miserable knowing you’ve got one foot out the door..........they will make sure you get that other one out.
