Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Here is the Furlough letter from insite.

Update to your Macy's, Inc. Employment
To: Macy’s, Inc. furloughed hourly colleagues

Update to your Macy’s Employment

COVID-19 is taking a heavy toll on our company. As mentioned in Jeff Gennette’s message earlier today, while we are doing what we can to conserve cash throughout this crisis, it is not enough. It has become clear that this is not a short-term crisis and we need to be prepared to weather a longer-term closure of our stores. While we hope to be able to begin re-opening stores in April, we are taking actions that will allow the business to operate without store sales through May.

As such, effective Wednesday, April 1, 2020 you will begin furlough.

Here’s what being on furlough means.

A colleague furlough is a temporary layoff from ALL work activity. This means you will remain employed but will do no Macy’s-related work during this period, either voluntarily or at the request of your People Leader.

You will not receive pay, PTO and 401k contribution.

You will continue to receive health benefit coverage if you currently participate in a Macy’s, Inc. plan. The company will cover 100% of your premium costs through May, if needed. This includes coverage for any dependents who are currently on your benefits plan.

Here’s what is included if currently enrolled: Medical, Dental, Vision, STD (hourly colleagues enrolled with Prudential), LTD, Life Insurance, Accidental Death and Dismemberment, Spouse Life, Children’s Life, Hospital Indemnity, Accident Insurance, Critical Illness, Group Legal, and Identity Theft Protection provided through third party insurance companies. The Company will cover the colleague/associate portion of the benefit costs during April and May 2020, if needed.

You are eligible to take advantage of unemployment and other state and national relief programs where available. This includes the new government relief package being offered.

You may secure temporary work at another company without severing your employment with Macy’s, Inc.

Furloughs were not determined based on performance or tenure. The furlough period will not be reflected as a “break in service” and colleagues will continue to build tenure.

While furloughed, you remain a colleague of Macy’s, Inc. and an important part of our family. Once we enact the plan to re-open our stores, we will begin re-calling furloughed colleagues.

What’s next.

Effective April 1, your system access will be limited to My IN-SITE, AskHR, MyHR, and MyTotal Rewards, only. You will not have access to your email during this time. Your current emails and folders, and any emails that come into your inbox during the furlough, will remain in your account and will be there when you return to work.

You should not make any changes to your email. You should not add an out of office or forward your emails to another colleague – unless instructed to do so by your People Leader. An automatic out of office will be applied to your email that says: This email address is inactive at this time.

If there are external partners you need to notify, please do that immediately and direct them to your People Leader until the furlough is over. You should forward Jeff Gennette’s companywide message with a note stating that you will be off-line during furlough and provide them with a temporary contact.

It is important that you take a moment to ensure your personal information is up to date in My IN-SITE, as this will be how we communicate with you throughout the furlough.

Additionally, over the next day and a half, your People Leader will reach out to talk through business critical projects and next steps. If you are employed in California or Wisconsin, you will receive an additional communication about this furlough under state WARN provisions.

You can find more information in our FAQ and policy documents posted on the COVID-19 page of My IN-SITE.

Capitalism for the poor socialism for the rich. You are furloughed - we will pay your health insurance, but the state and federal government can pay your salary by you taking advantage of all the relief programs set up. Because, as a big private company we can't cover your salary - let the government handle that. Folks, if you've worked hard at your job(s) don't ever feel guilty again, not for one second, if you take medicare, medicaid, food stamps, unemployment, disability, social security etc. etc. These large corporation that rake in more than you can ever dream never do. We've entered new territory if losing a bunch of service and retail jobs brings our economy to it's knees like this, and all they ever talk about is automating them, well the big boys and state and federal govt. better start planning to always provide people with some minimum basic income. Or, start creating better jobs that pay a living wage. P.S. - I don't even work for Macy's Good luck to you all - I'm sorry.

They're admitting they're running out of cash.

They're adding an out of office message that states the email is inactive.

Face it folks, time is drawing near for a bankruptcy filing. Many of these stores closed will not reopen. Many of your friends, if your store reopens, will not return.

This is bad, very bad. I hope I'm wrong...but I doubt I am.
