Thread regarding Halliburton Co. layoffs

This could be useful

I know there are at least a few people who have just been laid off despite being close to retiring.

"Losing a job is always a stressful situation, especially during a health crisis, but it can be particularly devastating for individuals close to retirement. This demographic is more likely to suffer age discrimination when looking for a new position, they may still need health care coverage after being unexpectedly separated from their employer and they may still have years to go until they have saved enough for their retirement."

Who in the world comes up with taking a retirement in lieu off a rig? Did you mean to take Lou from pump packing stall? Or Betty Lou from dispatch? The only package to take is what ever is offered. Take your package take your unemployment take your time as you find that perfect Marina or set of vacation cabins! Don't ever be the person working 100 hours per week for the H do it for yourself. If in good enough shape be a Marine never look back.

If you haven’t saved enough with just 1 to 2 years till retirement then you really haven’t planned well. During 2008 downturn, I got serious about saving and investing for myself. I got lucky with the market doing well, but I always had an exit plan from HAL. I made it through the 2015-2016 merger attempt and downturn. Actually got raises due to retention bonuses. Come late 2019, was laid off mainly due to weak deep water outlook and a weak product line. I was angry for a while, but at the same time relieved. I knew I did my best. I feel bad for people who need that pay check now. ‘This time it’s different’ is a true statement today. I would explore your options, if you need work, go where the jobs are, this oilfield is just isn’t what it once was. (In it since 1980, so I’ve seen some downturns) Companies have commoditisized our services and we simply don’t make the money for what we provide. Something will have to change. Unless you really loved your job, I would seriously consider changing careers. For me, I said thank you very much for the severance package, but I will not allow myself to look back and say I want to work for you and help you guys (Halliburton) get out of this mess.

If you have worked for Hal a couple decades and have been laid off, then do ask about "retirement in lieu of RIF." There aren't many benefits, but one or two might be useful. If you are close to Medicare age, then ask about medical insurance.
