Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Woodlands

Mass layoffs happened in Woodlands during last couple of months and more in pipeline. On the other hand Full time employees are having a great time.

Contractors are getting permanently laid off with a 1 day notice. Many are H1B's with family. They donated 1 million in Houston but can't even give a proper 2 week notice to their hard working employee. New manager and supervisor too arrogant.

Exxon Mobil is a great company to work for but few individuals & office politics made it not so good anymore. And seeing current situation i would not ever want to work for an oil and gas company in future period. American oil and gas companies are not reliable and is going down.

In the same lay off boat with thousand others. It depends on the team you are in but in general at Exxon Hughes landing unlike other companies a contractor is a contractor and will never be considered part of the family no matter how good or how many years you been there. This means when business goes down contractors would be the first ones to let go. It is understandable, but it is extreme to let go contractor without any kind of notice. Management can do this because they can without being exposed in public
Not all but i did find some full time employees to be arrogant with bad attitude. But no matter what world knows American Oil & Gas companies are going down at fast pace and future is looking dull.

" I am NOT an employee, but I respect this because if I was," ... but but but you are not so, get off the thread KAREN, I am sure with the shopping being opened up this weekend there will be plenty of managers you can speak too. If you don't get that reference again get off the thread.
"I was a contractor who did get laid off & was lucky enough to be in a group that did treat us (contractors) like family."
Sorry to hear that I am sure we are all heading that way just a matter of time. Keep your head up. I too am having a great time with my XOM counterparts. It is just the Karen's of the company that forget, that it's shareholders first, as it should be with any publicly traded company.

Sorry to hear about those who are not being treated decently

I was a contractor who did get laid off & was lucky enough to be in a group that did treat us (contractors) like family. I have experienced the XOM vs. Contractor before in a different group and I could never wrap my head around some of the ego. Yes, there’s a difference in being a contractor & XOM...I understand that. But we’re all human and it’s still one company...we all brought something to the table with whatever our jobs may be or have been. Be better to each other guys, at least on this thread. I have enjoyed my time as a contractor and am thankful for that opportunity.

How can anyone call this discrimination logically. You are a CONTRACTOR, no benefits from XOM. They are ONE company that has never ever in the history of XOM done a layoff and they do not intend to now. I am NOT an employee, but I respect this because if I was, I would want to know the company is taking care of their own. Could they have been more straightforward, YES, but it all was based on what projects would continue to get funding, nothing more and nothing less. Do not make yourself of "victim" here. Many are LUCKY enough to get the H1 approved to come here and make a better way for your family so to sit here and try and play a victim is frankly disgusting. Do you see employees leaving for 4 to 6 weeks on vacation? Or need 2 months off to get married? The most ungrateful sounding group of people on this thread. YOU NEED TO REMEMBER WHO YOU WERE WHEN YOU WERE LITTLE IN OUR OWN EYES AND WHAT IT FELT LIKE TO GET THE H1 AND THAT FIRST JOB IN THE USA, and quite acting like XOM or America OWES YOU something!

Just looking through these replies shows how little employees care for contractors. Employees are under contract as well, its just a different contract. You slap a label like contractor, facilities worker, operator, CEO but its doesn't make you different or give someone the right to treat someone without respect and understanding. Companies are built by their employees AND their contractors. By saying "please sign this document so I can get rid of you in the future to maximize my profits" doesn't mean you have good business ethics. It just means you know how to take advantage of people in need. In modern times where companies have taken steps such as executive pay and bonus cuts or employees rallying by taking a week or two of no pay manage to reduce expenditures without hurting the people who helped them build in the first place. I have not been laid off, but there were many talented people who did. Its sad to see how easily employees can move on because they don't see contractors as comrades. I hope everyone who got laid off finds a job and those looking for employment and lucky enough to choose, pick a company that values people over profits.

Wow that escalated quickly!!!
Let's leave the politics out of this as everyone benefits from contract labor (Yay capitalism!). We bust ourselves and EM benefits. H-1BS (i am not one) get competitive pay (north of 90k) so they make good money (more than they would in their home country) but not more than their EM counterparts as the misinformed below think. Yes, contracts are worth more but contractors only see a portion of that. I am not coming here for the politics of taking American jobs nor lazy Americans (of which my nephew is one lol). I come here for news of what people are hearing about contracts. Ok maybe sometimes the juicy gossip!!

You haven't been around long enough. "...Basically they were pushing contractors to get as much work done sooner so they can be released, very sneaky..." They were working to get their bonuses, the harder they work the contractors the better they are viewed higher up the food chain.

Look at it from a different view. When the hiring begins, a new batch of contractor gets a chance to join the force. The old batch can do something else.
Stop whining, s— it up, nobody forced you to be here.

Contract labor being released is actually not even a layoff. Its termination of the contract at will. Contractors provide services for pay, the length of that term may vary and the contract can be terminated at will by either party. That is why contractors are so frequently used in the first place. The workforce is highly flexible and can easily be managed to fit the workload. Problem is many contractors think their long-term contractual positions make them part of the family. It doesn't. There is no discrimination in this scenario, rather it exemplifies the very basis of the agreement, exercising the ability to manage the workforce without all the complications and processes that organization must complete to separate an employee.

You should have saved.

How is it discrimination? You are a contract employee. Do you not know what that means? Number one, it means you are not an employee. Number two, it means you are the first to go when there's a downturn. If you think it's discrimination, try to find a lawyer who will take the case. Guess what? You won't find one.

As a contractor, you made more money than the employee. However, in the oilfield, it's not how much you make but how much you SAVE when you are making it.

Management could have been more straightforward & responsible.
I was laid off also had been working at woodland hughes landing location for many years as a contractor.

They let go many of my colleagues all of them were contractors within a day notice. Full time employees are still working so i see a discrimination there.

As soon as coronavirus hit in Feb management already started planning exit strategy to release all the contractors. They were already running low on a tight budget since the beginning of the year.

Basically they were pushing contractors to get as much work done sooner so they can be released, very sneaky.

Management could have been more straightforward & responsible.
