Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Enough!

Tell everyone.you know to stay away from Allstate, their products and those that support them. As a current employee I am insulted by the arrogant comments about this being basic Business or Economics. The truth is this company will do anything at the employee expense as long as it produces a return for the shareholder or Executive leadership preservation. Need I remind you of the salary freezes put in place a few years ago and the Health Insurance situations some regions experienced. How about their plan to eliminate all California employees, a plan put in place because they were tired of being sued for violating labor laws over and over and over again......then filling those vacancies in states w/ no overtime rules for "Exempt" employees. It is also true that they do have Quick Photo & IT call centers in India, at the expense of US jobs......it speaks volumes. How about the Hypocracy of Work Life balance, or NOT recognizing the friday before the 4th of July as a Company holiday because of need to severe customers, yet Tom W's cowardly attempt to avoid political pressure by giving us Friday Juneteenth as a Co holiday. Not taking away from the value of juneteenth but both should be recognized holidays.... Allstate exists because of the United States of America.

That said, the level of "Transparency" viewed from my level is clearly pretentious and self serving. Their actions demonstrate they don't care about the employee. So, if I do survive the overhaul, I will do all that I can to seek employment elsewhere because I can only imagine what additional demands will be placed on those left standing who work in "Exempt" positions in states with overtime laws favorable to Allstate.....I will also tell everyone I know to STAY AWAY FROM ALLSTATE.

It’s not JUST Allstate that is trending in this way. It’s becoming the new norm in the corporate world. I don’t like having to choose which of my dedicated team members must be sacrificed—and I don’t like knowing that I could be next. Corporate America will ALWAYS remain stakeholder-focused over internal and external customers. Just like Republicans with always give breaks to corporate America and Democrats will strive for bigger government. If you’re trying to build your career climbing the corporate ladder…know to succeed…you may have sacrifice good workers—to remain in favor with the senior leadership. And unless you strive for power or recognition, you will never be happy or content. Find what you are passionate about, and go do it. You just might find greater value in happiness, than greed.

Can I give a takeaway to all of this from the sales side? Corporate Holidays were not Agency holidays. If LSP's did not reach their sales quotas they were Insurance, are now reducing fired. If agents did not meet their sales goals they paid dearly in the percentage of business that they were paid from. I cannot tell you how many in Regional offices, Claims, Home Office, RMBC NEVER pick up their phones, instead using "I am away from my desk, leave a message and I will call back within 24 hours." The problem was there were many times where the return call was never received.

Many companies, including Nationwide Insurance, are now reducing staff. Nationwide is also cutting thousands of jobs because so much of what we do is automated. If a Regional office cannot give any exceptions to an RMP, a computer is the only thing needed to issue a policy. The premium from that policy is what pays for all operations in an insurance business. No one physically looks at a policy unless the computer kicks it out. Appeals to any policy get rejected by the RMBC because the email appeal went to the wrong desk and the process need and the move to ed to be started all over again.

Was I frustrated with Allstate during my time there? Absolutely, because I was a team player who had all of my policies (auto, home, life, annuities) with Allstate and I knew I was paying more premium for less product and protection. Unfortunately, MANY, within Allstate corporate do not have their own coverage through the company that they work for. When I say MANY I mean perhaps 30% of the Regional Office, FSL's, TOM's and many other alphabet soup designated individuals. Your decision to not insure with your own employer may have just cost you your job. There will still be 40,000 of you when this round is over and the move to 4 Hubs will certainly cost additional jobs for folks not willing to move. I feel for the employees who have spent their weekends and evenings hunched over their laptops doing Allstate work. I have a giant middle finger for the executives who will be rewarded at the end of the year by the BOD for cost savings when the majority of those savings are from families lives being turned upside down.

Here is something consumers DO care about. When they call for assistance and they are speaking to a guy in India. That really makes them mad. They don’t even hire Spanish speaking people to help customers. They use a third party translator and google translate for emails. I’ve been seeing more customers canceling policies every day. If it isn’t the high prices, and it isn’t the outsourced customer service, maybe it’s that rebate they got for COVID-19 that was less than $20 then their rates went up $30. Customers are mad! Agents are really mad! I love the arrogance of the corporate reps on here. What do I know? I know that I can easily replace my income and you can’t.

Rmbc has to use pto because they were given an extra pto in their bank for 2020. It’ll be co holiday next year with no extra pto day. Enjoy your day off.

Bottom line I have worked for Allstate about 30 years. We were always number 2 behind state farm. They gave us elaborate kick-offs, company picnics, holiday parties, good benefits, pension, vacation, sick days, decent pay. We hired Tom Wilson and Glen Shapiro. They striped us of everything except our dignity. Now we are number 4/5 in the insurance industry. So you tell me where the problem lies?

In the RMBC we were told Friday the 3rd would be a company holiday. We can work or we can take the day but we would need to use PTO. So not really a company holiday, they’re just opening the outage on our calendars so no one will get an occurrence if we do take the day.

Pretty sure there are a lot of businesses open on Friday the 3rd-grocery stores, liquor stores, fast food, pharmacies, US mail and what ever retail stores that are surviving the pandemic. Also, can I see a show of hands that stopped using google, Facebook, and every car manufacturer in the world because they have laid off employees? Consumers don’t care about layoffs unless it is their own company.Btw, it doesn’t even make the news anymore. There have been 40 million layoffs this year!

First off, it's not a company holiday for claims. Neither is the day after Thanksgiving. Sad but true, yeah, claims has to be here for the customers.

Second, yes, Allstate is bound to its shareholders because it's a publicly traded company. That is the reality of the company we work for. No, that doesn't always speak well for how employees are treated. I completely understand the frustration. I've worked in claims for 35 years but am a few years too young to retire. Am I worried about the layoffs? You bet I am. Thirty five years and too young for retirement is a tough job hunting position.

If you're truly concerned, it's time to take advantage of everything Allstate has put out there (linked in courses, etc). Take what you can, build your skills and resume, and be ready for what might come next. I've been through two office closings, one of which required uprooting my family and moving, and one that led to my current position (I've managed to stick around so far). If this isn't the place for you, as I said, take advantage of career building opportunities thru LinkedIn, etc, prep your resume, and be ready for change, whether it's on your terms or theirs. That's what I'm planning to do. Do what's in your best interest because no one else will do that for you.

The pathetic thing is, 90% of you aren't even going to be affected like this, and will return to work as if nothing happened, while all this vitriol under the surface is simmering. No, I'm not upper management, I am a guy just like you, and you are all pathetic entitled crybabies.

This is embarrassing. No wonder our world is going to hell in a handbasket.

Uh you must work in Home Office or a Regional Office - it is NOT a holiday for claims. In fact I will be working on the 4th of July. It is called Saturday duty to service our customers.

Well said. It is like when a customer has a bad experience with a claim and they tell their Family and friends and the word spreads . Allstate doing away with thousands of employees - can you imagine how the word is going to spread from family members and friends who tell their family and friends.
Allstate is laying off thousands during the worst of times when the job market is slim. Wilson does not care about the employees. Happy employees makes good employees! Employees are customers too. I see a lot of employees dropping their insurance along with their family and friends. What they have done shows what kind of company they are. It doesn’t look good.
