Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

July 1 Oracle Layoffs

Reduction in force; after over 20 years of great reviews and hard work..kicked to the curb.

Kicked to the curb without the needed Health Insurance. Too old to find another job...who cares.

Not Oracle.

Hi all – looking to talk with some people who were impacted by layoffs (or those who know more specific numbers/departments). Can reach out to me at alandis at newsy dot com or on Twitter at @_AustinLandis. Thank you!

Oracle hates America so much they won't even keep server hardware here:

I was laid off from Oracle in 2017 at 57. It was the first time to be laid off in my 33 year career. It took me 18 months to find another job. Great company, 5 minutes from home. But I had to readjust my expectations and went from being a senior director to an individual contributor. That meant over a 50% reduction in my salary. But at least now I have a salary and healthcare coverage and I'm not burning through my savings. I work for a company with integrity and I'm not depressed and stressed. I am now 60 and hope to stay in this job for 3-5 years if possible. Good luck to my fellow "experienced" workers.

Such a nasty company! Its insane to let go an employee after 20 years. The company is not going out of business. Talks a lot about the culture and ethics.

Ageism meant it took me twice as long to find a decent job after my lay-off. I worked a [email protected] job with a nut job boss for a couple of years to retool, while I cultivated connections and got my foot in the door with a good company.

It’s doable. Start with your attitude.

You are not old, you are experienced.

Companies are not discriminating against you personally, you just haven’t found the right one yet.

You get the idea.

Ageism is real and I’m a woman in the 50-55 age bracket. Orientation or race may help but gender doesn’t. I’m 11 months from my oracle riff and I will probably never work at the level I was in tech again and maybe even in tech again.

Don’t waste more than 3 months trying to find a “replacement” role at the same level and pay and only in tech. Try everything outside of big tech, retrain, or use your skills to transfer to another industry. Tech doesn’t want us. Find your dharma.

Don’t believe the well intentioned posts about your age not being an issue. They obviously are not 55+, or they would not make such an obviously wrong statement. They don’t think it’s real, because they haven’t had it happen to them. I have. It’s the only approved, if unspoken about discrimination in hiring today. Ageism. If you are 50-55, unless you have some other desired ‘protected’ race/gender/orientation, no hr team will let you in. They have ‘too many’ like you already. It s—s, but delusion is worse. Good luck to you. Remember it was NOT personal, it was math. They hope to replace you with someone they can get for 50% of the pay, and a visa. Better control that way for them. They can’t quit, no matter how bad it is...

Sad this happened to you too. After the 2014 bloodbath, I realized if you are over 50, no one, and I mean no one in tech will hire you if you are a white male. Sad, but true. Best to start your own company, or try something new. Don’t waste two years of your life like I did. The discrimination is real.

Companies in general do not care but you are lucky to have survived so many other Oracle layoffs. You must have been very valuable to have been there so long. Focus on that value and find another job. Don't think of age as an impediment. Look at it as very strong experience. People who get laid off or forced off the job will suffer some blow to their esteem. Happens to the best of us. Even to Steve Jobs. Just don't let that discourage you.

I wouldn’t be so negative. You’d be surprised what’s out there and the skills you have.
