Thread regarding Norfolk Southern Corp. layoffs

Common sense

I was told years ago, that the railroad has never used common sense or good judgment. An old general foreman told me that. I couldn’t figure out why when we were having a high up official visiting our shop, we would trash new parts instead of cleaning and organizing. Then we would need the parts the next week, so then it’s reordered.
Today it’s the same mentality. The company will lay-off workers in order to save money and then they will want you to come back when they get desperate.

Dont Badmouth the Army by comparing it to NS. The Army treated me with respect and was professional.....NS is neither!

The only reason that there could be some recalls is that there has been some retirements. Shop craft personal usually will retire after qualifying for vacation for the following year. You have to work 100 days to qualify, so they will retire and get paid for the remaining vacation days plus the next years pay. I’ve seen up to 10 people retire in the month of June before.
Some guys will retire and cash out for 10 weeks vacation pay ..

Everyone keeps talking about getting recalled and them hiring more people. I havnt seen any craft jobs posted in several months.

I was in the Army for a few years and the similarities between the way NS operates and my time in the Army are endless. It was a pretty seemless transition from one to the other. So many dumb, uneducated people making decisions affecting people’s day to day lives. Asinine.

It’s like working for a temp agency or seasonal employee. I got furloughed in March and I hear they’re supposedly calling back some people but don’t know if I will be one of them. My new job doesnt pay as good but it’s not minimum wage either. Why would i come back just to be let go again in a few months and burn whatever bridge I’ve built in the mean time.

Common sense will not be tolerated on railroad property!

I believe that due to class one railroads being publicly owned and practically publicly managed by just about any old suit dummy, that a lot of the personable and common sense decisions are meaningless. Slash and burn
