Thread regarding L3Harris Technologies layoffs

Starting Salaries

Does anyone have any insight on the starting salaries for an engineer? More specifically someone who is a new grad? Is the offer negotiable at L3H?

Learned how to code. It took me about a year to get the basics down and I make 120k a year. Your degree and aspirations to climb the corporate he-l scape make me laugh.

Started at $74,500 w/ L3Harris as a New Grad SWE. Not the best....

I know plenty of engineers with PhD level education that are just now getting this kind of money.

That's what we call salary compression. $80K sounds high to me to but not astronomically high... about five years ago I think our division was around $70K for the most qualified new hires... back when we still had new hires...

There's absolutely no way that a new hire grad in engineering is seeing an $80k offer. Someone isn't giving accurate information. I know plenty of engineers with PhD level education that are just now getting this kind of money.

80,000 offer for a new grad in June of 2020. I know for a fact. Your ability to learn, thrive and enjoy your job depends on the project you are on and the managers that run them. I've been on three projects and they are all completely different. If I had been hired for the second project I was on, I would have quit a month later. I am currently on a very demanding project but they are throwing a lot of different technology at me and it's enjoyable at least 50% of the time. I am staying in my position.

Everything is negotiable. But if you're just out of college don't expect top tier wages. Plenty of engineers with a lot of actual work experience are looking now too.

I appreciate everyone’s responses, thanks! I took the L3H offer and I am excited to learn as much as possible, and hopefully I will either progress within the company or transition to another.

Seems to me that ten or fifteen years ago, some companies were better than others. Now it seems like they are all about the same after years of the desperate "race to the bottom." There are some smaller companies that offer good benefits such as fully paid medical or very generous 401k contributions but in the end you are just a name on a list.

In other words, make the best deal you can, keep your resume up to date, and always keep your eye out for the next job.

ALWAYS negotiate your salary on the front-end and ask for the signing bonus (which ranges from $5,000 to $20,000 depending on the position). If you receive a signing bonus, you will be locked-in to working at L3Harris for a year, HR will count the days to ensure you are there a full 365 days otherwise you will to give the bonus back in its entirety, no proration). Free advice: if you accept the position, understand in advance that when you start looking to get out of L3Harris (which you will at about the 1 year mark), due to the sheer volume of L3 employees, especially engineers, a competitors HR and hiring managers DO place L3Harris employees in 3rd tier (last) for hiring consideration. I genuinely recommend if you have no other offers, take the L3 offer but continue to actively look for another company. You do not want to start or end your career at a substandard organization such as L3Harris. Terrible place to have ever worked.

Dont apply in slc. Most employees are overpaid boomers who can barely manage to use email correctly while constantly complaining about everything. On top of that is the nepotism and underqualified supervisors and managers. Watch the replies and you will get a taste.

They might not pay you much at first, but getting those years of experience in will help you build your career, you can always quit and go somewhere else.

Of course you can negotiate. You may not be successful but you can always ask. Even in Tori.

Bring your helicopter mom with you when you negotiate.

Unfortunately I am hearing a similar message on other platforms. Thank you for your response! So you are saying don’t bother negotiating and just take the offer? Also, would you say they pay well (competitive) or not?
Thanks!

Ex L3 employee here. Take it if this is the only offer you have. Otherwise don’t start working here. You will regret many months later.

More specifically, within the Tori-State area.
