Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

Past Tense

Unions are a thing of the past. Protecting the worker...yeah, right. There's nothing that a union can give you that you can't already get, and more, in a non-union shop. Don't let them fool you. A job is yours as long as the company can afford to pay you. When they can't, you're out. No union can help you at that point.

The real enemy is piss-poor executive mgmt which has routinely and predictably sank nearly every large ship that has ever set sail. In 3 yrs Verizon will be either a shell of its former self, broken up into smaller chunks and sold off, or spiral in on fire with flames shooting from its tail with its assets sold off at Craigslist prices. Even if you aren't offered a severance...update your LinkedIn page, dust of the paper resume, and get the f*** outta that place ASAP!

Lot of misleading information in this thread.

I often work with wireline techs and have gotten to know many of them personally. The Union techs in VZ wireline get paid more and have better benefits and pension. Sorry, but if we had joined them in the beginning we would have been better off. It’s too late now. They simply have better working conditions and are treated better and more fairly.

As a wireless employee, up until a year ago I would have 100% agreed with your statement. We’re constantly showed comparisons of what we get versus what union employees get, and they get exactly what we do AND they have to pay dues, so they end up losing, right??

WRONG! I am on a hybrid wireless/wireline team now and those comparisons are FALSE. Union Employees get paid a LOT more than non union employees. A LOT! I’m taking 2-3x in some cases.

While I agree with most of what you’ve said it seems Verizon is worried about Union chatter. Why else would they have had management take updated trainings about how to sweep Union talk under the rug with reps? It’s definitely something the company is trying to avoid and there’s a reason for that.
