I called HR to ask about my term letter. First question I was asked was, "how old are you?". What???? How old I am? Why, how, and when would that matter? Am I missing something legitimate?

Oracle does not ever reveal the names of those laid off to anyone. It makes it very interesting to work - you find out the one person who did what you need has been gone for x months when you can't find them in the company directory, or your contact info doesn't work, and you start calling around. I've seen a LOT of layoffs at Oracle over the 15 or so years I worked there, and while we knew there were layoffs there was no acknowledgement from Oracle.
As ridiculous as it sounds, I definitely wouldn’t put it past HR to have no idea when an employee or former employee was born. Finding that out would take what, like almost three clicks in Aria, man. What are they, computer jockeys?
Human Resources wouldn’t even know their own birth dates if mom didn’t pin it to the inside of their jackets or write it on their lunchboxes when they left to catch the short bus every morning.
This has got to be the stupidest post on this forum. Are you implying HR doesn't know your date of birth?
HR should already know hold old you are.
The termination agreement you receive should have the job titles and ages of your co-workers that were RIF'd with you as an Addendum. This is a legal requirement. If your HR department does not know how old you are then that is a problem.
To be clear how does being over 40 impact this or not? For anyone reading this in either group. I asked when my term letter would be sent. Then was asked age. If legitimate, awesome. But the two people I have spoken with in HR could not explain. Told me to call back.
Well. How old ARE you?
If over 40, you could be a member of a protected class.
Maybe they send you to a different group to handle you.
