Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

February 2021 and more layoffs of management

I have been hearing from now (don’t know if it’s true or not) that many executives are worried about the next layoffs in 2021. Higher ups are evaluating the business throughout the year end or may be beginning of next year. As we all know that the business is not as usual and the company is now getting smaller. It might take many years to get back on track with business. But the company is making decision ahead of time for the future.
In my opinion, It will be much more worst than the last hit of layoffs in 2020.

If the business is small than there is no need of 4 5 sales managers to be in the building. Many store might shrink and will exclude the merchandise which is not needed or brands that are not needed.

I have also heard that many departments will be gone but the space will be leased to other companies who will pay rent.

Much more to see in 2021. Better to have some options for you in the market as many other companies are laying off and there will be a lot of jobless people in the market and demand will be less.

Any idea?

Macy's needs to shrink there stores with in two years in order to survive. Macy's needs to have fewer stores or they will be filing for bankruptcy like JCPenney and Sears. Department stores at the malls are closing and smaller stores too. It's a domino effect, once a anchor store closes at a mall smaller stores will follow too. There's going to be alot of C or D malls, or probably alot of empty malls within a year or two.

Oh there'll DEFINITELY be more layoffs coming. As early as January, Macys had a three year plan to close down + eliminate jobs by 2022 across the board. This pandemic only accelerated that timetable. I've heard they brought a few associates back last week with maybe some more coming in September (was supposed to be August). As stated above, this pandemic has changed the very landscape of retail, not just Macys.
I will say, however, that the biggest mistake on Macys part was hearing at rallies that we had to compete with Amazon, which has no stores to speak of.

Agreed with previous reply .. but the landscape of retail has been changing for awhile now; the pandemic only accelerated the need for retailers to take action. The mall department store is dying (dead?). When I was growing up; my friends and I went to the mall to just hang out . My 17 yo daughter shops for everything online and won’t even go shopping with me, nor her friends. Macy’s brick-and-mortar needs to be smaller to stay alive.

Every year inventory is on January and the start of the fiscal year for Macy's is on February. So expect a lot of layoffs after inventory. This Pandemic has change the landscape in retail stores. So expect a lot of stores closing.
