Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Do managers support teams or panders to upper management?

Please respond with either "supports teams" or "panders to upper management", or your own category.

The best 2 managers I ever had managed with the philosophy that their primary job was to support and guide their team. These teams were the most impactful I have been on in my career. Sad to say that this was after I left Ford more than 10 years ago. Wondering if Ford has changed and if it's worth investing in given the low stock price.

Alan Mullally displayed more talent at Ford than the whole Dream Team combined now has. Sad.

You guys are paid really well for what you do. These types of posts are really trivial.

Stop complaining, stop analyzing, keep your heads down and work.

You would not last a year anywhere else.

Pander....likely do to what another poster has said. Talent level at management, even at lowest level L6, is really bad the past few years.

Cost Estimating at ford is about 160 strong, many of these people have Engineering degrees. This is in the middle between Suppliers, ford Engineers, and buyers. Listen to them, they know how to control costs.

Since F2000 in the mid 90s You can see the talent level go down. To the point that 3 of the last 4 CEOs
came from the outside ( i put Billy in there since his name was on the side of the building). I do see any visionary or leaders in that company? If we went to war would you follow any one of them?

This is the exact situation i am in right now. My LL6 is completely useless when it comes to leading his section. All he does is sit in higher level meetings, says nothing in them, and provides zero guidance or strategic delegation of who is covering what. You ask him a question, you get three answers:

  1. I dunno
  2. Ask this person
  3. Another question

This is probably the worst supervisor i have ever had at my time at Ford. I am so close to hitting the eject button and taking my career in a different direction. It's gotten so bad in the last 5 years that I don't know if they can pull through it. The engineering function has got their gonads cutoff by finance, purchasing, EPLM, and ridiculous GPDS timing. They are not letting engineers behave like engineers, which is ethically/morally corrupt. The way we are cutting corners in the name of rushing to market is of great concern. We are not making soda pop, toothpaste, or baby yoda toys. We are making 5000lb objects that move down the road at 80mph.

LL4 and above especially only pander to upper management in order to save their own hides at the expense of sacrificing their teams
