Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM must convince the market that it is relevant

A vast majority of IBM customer-facing employees are for the most part cloud illiterate or best case, semi- literate. Many can spout the top 10 buzz words but have little in- depth idea of what is the cloud offering or business. IBM spent the last year educating the sales force on cloud but it was mostly money wasted. No one really cares about cloud. IBM is not very competitive in cloud as customer perception does not view IBM as a major Cloud player and, anyway, most customers have already chosen AWS, Azure, or Google as their primary cloud provider. IBM must convince the market that it is relevant which is a tall order given the general sales employee apathy towards cloud. There is no real buzz or excitement around cloud at IBM.

If a CEO goes all in on a project and the project fails, the CEO should resign or be immediately fired. That obviously does not happen at IBM. She bet the company and lost every time.

How many "moonshots" did we have under Ginni? I lost count.

Frankly, I don't believe you can run a company the size and age of IBM on "bet the company" moonshots. It's as if Ford announced it was betting everything on an all-electric two seater city car - sure, we'll keep the other stuff around, but all the R&D is going to the new idea. Or GM betting everything on fusion reactors, because one day they are going to be really big.

Maybe a better direction for IBM would be to split itself up into units that are actually manageably small and stop subjecting us to the endless layers of bureaucracy of a corporate monolith and the burden of "corporate strategic directions" that make no sense for 80% of the products.

Mind you, if we keep divesting entire divisions (I miss you, SWG!) we're sort of going that way by default, except that the last division standing (mainframe?) gets to inherit all of the corporate structure, which will be just as big and unwieldy as it is today.

Don't forget the Mobile pillar. IBM is your best choice for mobile technology.

In order to convince the market that it is still relevant, Big Blew should have their sales people talk up Blockchain, Watson, and IOT. Oh, and don't forget all those patents...
