Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

The end of the Visual Managers

I've been a VM for this company for over 18 years and it's sad to see that this is the end for us. I remember when it was our job to give the customers a reason to come to Macy's. Big beautiful presentations and over the top window displays that inspired customers to spend their money here. We worked hard and took pride in what we did. The store managers not only valued our opinions but actually wanted them. I have worked with many extremely talented and creative VMs over the years and will miss every one of them. We have all worked so hard for so very little in return. So much for the magic of Macy's.

Macys is no longer relevant. It has been dying a slow death for decades. Consumer shopping habits have changed and not going back to cavernous department stores with nothing special.

The stores were a dump before. Now they will be a dump without spending the payroll for a visual manager. They were a highly compensated group...$60K $70K $80K salaries.

Sorry that you think Visual Magic is worthless. I ve worked as a VM for Bambergers and Macys for over 36 yrs and never took advantage of my time or gossiped. The VMs who work for the company work extremely hard -some never take an hr lunch because we have so much to do ... We lug fixtures ,ladders and 35 lb mannikins climb heights most people wouldNt ,Plan floor move , help install fixture shop, graphic on ledges , posters work w vendors and so much more... if you didnt ever do the job you have no idea . Loss of VM will make the stores look vanilla....

Hey weh+15zc50kk where did you find the time to visit every visual shop? My shop and everyone I've worked in has been spotless and well organized. Never been in a store that failed an audit because of visual. The shops are on the audit by the way. We visual managers just love it people make comments about our job with no idea what it is we truly do. Just sounds like you're a bitter little person with nothing better to do but try to make others feel bad. Take your bad vibes over to Wal-Mart .

I wish I had all the money that has been wasted on "Visual Magic"! I have never seen such waste in my life...…. Just look at the Visual shops! Every one of them a fire hazard! Junk piled everywhere. Oh, but the Visual team is too busy to clean it up! I watch them sipping on coffee at their benches and watching movies on their phones. Christmas is busy for them, but that's about it. The rest of the year they walk around the store and gossip. Won't be missed at my store!

I've been a store manager for years and have always had a great relationship with all my Visual Managers! Just for the record their job is not just dressing mannequins. They have one of the largest workloads in the store. Do not be disrespectful to some of the most talented people I've had the privilege to work with.

ykv+15zc50kk it's cute you think that's how it works. Mannequins are not all they do. Do some research and take your c-appy attitude to Wal-Mart.

If they gave detailed directives I would assume anyone could dress the mannequins and set projects just by copying the picture. Target does that and they look better than us sometimes.

Wow getting rid of the Visual Managers and their team?? Didn't JC Penney's do that same thing? We all know how well that worked out for them! Filed for bankruptcy and are closing almost all their stores. Great move Jeff! Have fun at Starbucks!

Hey wbr+15zc50kk this has nothing to do with that. It's about money! It always is. It's been like this for years. Let's combined as many jobs as possible and work that person to death for as little pay as they can get away with. Usually the job will go to the person who is willing to work for so little. Saw that happen when they combined op/ap. We know that's not working so well. If you are a visual manager you saw this coming. But the super talented visual managers and staff that I've had the privilege to work with over the past 15 years will have no problem finding a job that not only will pay them better but will value what they bring to a company.

Hey wbr+15zc50kk you are that person. Always has to be at least one hater in group. I know in my store the visual manager and his team are a valuable part of the store. If you're not on the visual team or a store manager I'm sure you're not aware of their relationship. You should take your negative attitude to Wal-Mart.

So wbr+15zc50kk not sure what store you've been in but almost all the VMs I've known over the years have had a great working relationship not only with their store manager but the entire executive team. I've never heard a VM brag that they don't answer to the store manager and I've worked with this company for almost 30 years. Yes they do not answer to the store manager but let's be honest here I have never had an issue with that and I sure other store manager feel the same. Not sure if you're aware but we give input to their director on a regular basis about their performance in the store.

Not to be that person but.... had visual managers been more team players and evolved more we might not be in this situation. Visual was the only job not being a total team player as part of the executive team. They would even brag that they don’t report to the store manager and don’t have to listen to them. Now the store manager is deciding their fate...

Were you already spoken to and know for sure? I'm a VM and have heard nothing. This is so crazy if true.

You can't even tell you're in a Macy's now!! What will we look like in a few months with them gone?

I will admit that as a store manager my visual managers could drive me crazy but they were hard working and extremely passionate about what they did! I relied on them for alot of things and they never let me down! The stores will never be the same if we lose them!

As a store manager, Visual Managers did make me crazy with their ideas for beautification, but I will admit that they made my stores special. Without them pushing hard with their input - at times, to irritation - we would have looked cookie-cutter. They really brought the magic to Macy’s.

Pretty soon you won't be able to tell the difference between Macy's, Wal-Mart or the Goodwill.
