I’m wrapping up my career with Chevron. The work can be challenging, but we are very process focused and tend to go with the flavor of the day. Right now it is digital transformation and the woke culture (read diversity) and soon a lot of job losses as IT is outsourced to Microsoft. Bad timing with Covid since it looks very cold by the corporation. Oil engineering jobs are mostly outside CA, although downstream refining jobs are in CA at the two refineries (Richmond and El Segundo). The Bay Area has a lot of Law, Finance, Shipping, and IT, but IT is about to he wiped out with a 30% plus layoff. Longevity is good, especially if you invested well through the 401K. If you don’t retire with a few million between the pension and 401K, you blew it, or you have gone through a divorce. LOL

Chevron as a company is absolute sh–. Besides the paycheck and perks I have nothing good to say about it. Sorry to rain on your parade mate...

I appreciate all the responses. Thank you so much for the insight. We are pretty much left in the dark over here. Can anyone tell me what departments are in Houston and what departments are in California? I need to start planning my next move.

Thanks for the thoughtful responses. There are some talented genuine people at Noble and I’m sure they would love the culture. Good information for many wondering what the future holds.

Chevron is a very conservative company and won’t bring people in to the office until they are certain it’s the right decision. Most of us in North America are still WFH and it’ll remain this way for a while yet, especially if schools and daycares aren’t open. Ultimately I think we will see a shift towards more people WFH permanently where it makes sense.

Houston has’t been in the office since March. No decision on anyone going back until mid August. Some functions could shift to work from home into next year, and many will be allowed to work from home due to kids and elder care. Chevron is very flexible.

I’m a current NBL employee. If I were to earn a position at Chevron can you describe what could be expected in terms of working remotely? I’m under the assumption that we may see another round of stay at home orders in most of our major locations for office workers. What’s it currently like for you folks and what do you expect?

Try working in the hi-tech computer industry. layoffs every other year, no severance, treated like slime, totally dependent on the cool-aid/vapor ware and current Qtr's results, Chevron is so so much better than THAT. You complainers have no idea what you are mumbling about. You have it so good here.

IT leaders are all over the place. Some are very focused on your strengths, empower you to do your job by removing blocks and really do want you to have a work-life balance; others (most now retired) have been micromanagers who laser focus on any shortcoming and were clock watchers.

I’ve been with Chevron for almost ten years, prior to that I worked in midstream with a short stint outside of industry. Those who are Chevron lifers don’t know how good they have it with this company...

Expect good pay, bonus, benefits, and good work/life balance. Most leaders are decent, with a few outstanding leaders, and a few that will hopefully be ousted in the transformation. Promotions take a while unless you are a high performer. There is a lot of kool aid to drink, but it’s not too bad and sometimes it gets some decent traction.

Welcome to Chevron.

@slh
In my direct experience the work life balance is good. So long as the work gets done, they dont stress too much about hours on the clock. Now that doesnt mean abuse the system because when you do they have to come down on everyone. Vacation is standard for the industry, 2 weeks for a new hire, 3 weeks after 5 years, 4 weeks at 10years, 5 weeks at 20 years. Lots of sick time available. None of my supervisors have been micromanagers but that depends on the supervisor.
All in all its a decent place to work aside from the job security and woke culture issues were seeing now.

What’s the work life balance like? Micromanagement? Strict on time? Schedule? Opportunity for growth? I know it all varies by dept and managers. Interested to hear from various depts.

Aside from comments already mentioned, CVX is a very structured and process driven company. Large and small capital projects, change management, personnel moves, etc all follow prescribed process. The good news is that the processes are well documented and fairly easy to understand. The bad news is that people and organizations can be paralyzed by the process.

The best piece of advice I can offer is learn the "language" of the company.

As someone pointed out in another post, Chevron is a good company and the total compensation is good. If you are looking to rise through the ranks with gobs of promotions and pats on the back, then you are in the wrong place. If you are looking for a decent job, with good benefits, good people, and opportunities to grow for self-satisfaction, then Chevron is like most other companies, inside out And outside of the oil industry. You make your job, not your company.

Be prepared to hear a lots of pointless, self-aggrandizing, mean spirited noise when you ask any legitimate questions here. Also, this being a layoff site and now being an especially tense time, expect a high volume of negative comments regarding the company. Some will be accurate, some will be specific to an individual, or a paranoid fantasy.

Regarding the company itself, expect an extremely high degree of PC corporate gibbering. We're talking tech-industry level Kool-Aid. Also, like everywhere in the industry, expect a degree of uncertainty during downturns. Beyond that, as long as you are performing, you will make a comfortable income, which is the only reason most of us are here in the first place. Good luck to you.
