Cisco hiring freeze, verbal confirmation given

Hi folks , I got a verbal confirmation on May 15 2020, as software engineer grade 8, in hyper flex team. Later that week recruiter says the position went on hold as they need ops director approval. He says after a month FY Budget will be out in July ending or August beginning. They will have an answer after budget is out. Can I rely on this ??

Short answer: NO. Unless you have the signed contract in your hands and confirmed that HR have the signed contract in their hands, then there are no guarantees. Don't hand in your notice to your existing employer until that is the case.

Wait or don’t, but don’t believe the toxic nonsense so many post here. It’s a great place to work.

Cisco will post jobs and interview people for research. Many jobs posted do not have funding.

Run away from the sinking ship, as fast as you can!

That team will have budget and is growing. You will likely be safe and get the offer.

Easy way to tell if it’s a real req or for research, the former starts with R on the req number, and the latter with S.

Who the heck is giving verbal confirmations? Mine have always been in writing.

But it seems strange that they were not telling you up front that they need director approval for hiring. I actually looked at the internal hiring FAQ they have up right now and it says that all positions require Sr VP approval, not Director, for business essential hiring.

It's also not uncommon for Cisco to post positions to collect resumes for positions that don't really exist. Why, I don't know. And, it's common for a position to get posted, then have budgets change at the end of Q3 or Q4/Year end and put the positions on hold.

Given that Cisco has closed all the US campuses and is under a mandatory work from home policy, it's more difficult to on-board new employees and get their laptops setup remotely, so most positions have been put on hold. And lots of contractors were given notice last Friday that tomorrow (7/24) will be their last day, which is the end of the fiscal year. Not a good sign for hiring, but each BU has a different budget and I haven't heard anything about the hyper flex team. I'm more tied into IT & Engineering IT teams.

Good to hear you're continuing to interview as I wouldn't hold my breath on this one.
