Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Why Do people assume layoffs are bad?

Let’s be honest, many of us are unhappy working for Allstate.

Being out of work especially with a severance means a few months to step away from this stress and find a job you like better. Plus, with the virus, now is a decent time to be out of work, with the benefits.

What is your main concern with being laid off?

finding out that the folks in Pune or the other parts of the world aren't even being included in this really ticks me off. Cleaning up the messes from there this company is paying so much more to actually have them doing the work.

This is the worst time to be looking for a job. Any other time I wouldn’t mind jumping into a new job With another company. My family depends on me for health insurance and I’m also the main breadwinner. My family depends on me for health insurance and I’m also the main breadwinner. We will definitely lose the house and have to sell at least one of my kids’ cars if I lose my job in the next few months here. Oh well, as long as Our leaders can have a great Xmas !

Because they have a family to care for and there are no other jobs available right now. Even if their current jobs s— at least it pays the bills.

As a former Allstate employee and someone who has been on furlough from my current company since March, now is not a time you'd want to be on the job market. This sounds like it's coming from someone with almost no responsibility and is very out of touch with reality.

40% of children food insecure, the worst unemployment since the Great Depression, over half of households behind on home/rent payments, half of businesses not making rent payments, half of restaurants shuttered forever, literal famines in the third world because of the dropoff in consumer demand, but what's wrong with being laid off? Can this poster be any MORE out of touch with what's going on with the world? Should be fired on general principle for being this situationally unaware, there's no way they could be competent at anything.

About the assessment, How is the company going to determine that the assessment is being taken by the Named employee? How can they determine that an employee is not going to have someone else take the assessment or if there are more than one family member in the same household that they aren’t Putting the same answers?

I saw my father laid off, and it was very hard for him. I’ve been in the same situation. Don’t minute minimize something you obviously have no experience with.

Unless you're near retirement and get a year's severance, getting laid off is pretty awful because choice is taken from you. Any plans you have, even if you're "near" retirement, are out the window. Currently, getting another job would be challenging, especially for older employees.

Even if you HATE the company, getting let go is traumatic so please don't undercut it.

I get the sense that you’re mngmt trying to calm the viewers of this site. Do you want to try to find a job in this economy? Do you want to pay high COBRA benefits for c-ap benefits such as high deductibles?

What benefits? Typical severance includes a discrete period of healthcare benefits continuance, then the option to extend with COBRA.

For anyone who has never converted to COBRA, expect at least 3 TIMES the out of pocket premium cost to maintain equal healthcare benefits. In my case, the premium for two people (employee + spouse) increased from $253/mo to $727/mo, not including dental or vision.

Can you afford that once your severance runs out? For how long??

Losing ones identity because they lost their boring corporate job at Allstate!?

That sounds pretty sad, no offense. Your job should not be your life, or your identity.

The timing is also b—s—. They are sending us off into what could become one of the worst economies in a very long time.

It’s more the principle. This company (along with others) just received giant tax cuts from the government putting many more millions in their pockets. The idea (which is false to begin with but that’s another story) was that doing so would stimulate job creation and trickle back down to the people. Instead the very opposite is happening. They are laying off workers and sending more work to countries where it can be done cheaper. Meanwhile the company and those at the top are doing just fine.

That’s what I object to. I perceive it to be a move motivated by greed more than necessity.

Have you ever been laid off? Doesn’t sound like it. It’s not a vacation. Not sure what you by “with benefits.” They usually stop when you’re laid off. To many, losing one’s job is losing one’s identity, their reason for getting up in the morning. It’s not easy, even if you’re lucky enough to have a second income from a partner/spouse or have a lot of money saved. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Last time I was laid off from a job that I was with for ten years, I got my severance, I got unemployment for three years, and then I got depressed. It turned into five years with two of those years with only one income. Foreclosure, bankruptcy. A lot of people don’t like change. Me being one of those people. Being laid off forces change that you don’t necessarily want/
