Anyone know why Machinists have been offered welding and those who take the class have the same qualification and certification as the Boilermakers?

NS is gearing up to implement the composite railroader. No more hour and 59 minute rule to complete another crafts work. All crafts will be able to perform any kind of locomotive work at any time. This will help NS with the worker shortage they created and give them leverage to be able to complete any project and work without going idle on a machine or project due to no qualified worker being available.
Yeah, a 4 or 5 week course at JLS and you can test for your AWS.
Ive been welding for years and still dont know everything , Tell me, how does a guy weld for a couple of hours become "certified" Those are the same guys who weld something on a car and it looks like a chicken p–ped on it.
The railroads dont have pensions like the coal/steel and other industries that have had their pensions wiped out. Railroad retirement is controlled/managed by the government just like Social Security. Biggest difference is that we pay in more and should get a better bang for the buck in the future when we retire. Railroad retirement is just as trustworthy to be around in the future as social security is. That being said I have a 401k and other investments.....
I hope your right but the history of pensions in industrial America says different and the current trend of do more with less is going to hurt the pension
As long as the govt. does not rob the railroad retirement, it will not be going away anytime soon. Almost everyone that retires dies WAY before they have a chance to get their worth out of it and it grows.
They don’t need machinists if the electricians can do it and then there is not enough people paying into the pension plan and it’s gone thank you very much SCABS !!!!!!!!!
They don't need boilermakers if the machinists can do it.
Weld qualified is done in house. Weld certs are done with a paid inspector. Being NS is so cheap, they are paying for every machinist to hold certifications, seems sketchy. Then again, it's NS.
Because boilermakers are going away.
Thank you for the info.
You can speculate that they want to get rid of boilermakers, if that is why you posted this...
But it has been that way for many years now. Why have different weld classes for the two crafts?
Also as a side note, if you work at JLS, and get your AWS weld certificates. Make sure to renew them every year with the AWS. It may help you land a job in the future...
