Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

161 Jobs Available

Jobs.exxonmobil.com has 161 job openings (mostly high skill positions) right now. As you would imagine, almost all of them are for low-cost locations. The writing is on the wall for workers in "high cost" locations. Workers in these locations are being treated like a declining oil field. We are more than likely about to layoff thousands of people, but we have time for "salary arbitrage" as I hear management say. It's a race to the bottom

@qcu this is an antiquated notion and there are now many talented and capable people working in the GBCs. This is why so many US employees are reeling due to lack of skills development and a sense of arrogance.

@gzh+16XgOfzO - in reference to your respond to @lye+16XgOfzO,
I think they are referring to the fact that when jobs get shipped overseas, the headquarters staff have to put a bandaid on it. The transition isn't always smooth and there have been various MAJOR issues which require Houston to solve.

That being said - if you think the Spring Campus should experience additional cuts then same would be said for Leatherhead, Calgary and Melbourne (which we know is happening now). What are all those people in Leatherhead supporting beside Fawley, Fife and a few pipelines & terminals? Maybe EM should be outsourcing most their headquarters staff everywhere and not just in Spring.

You get what you pay for. If management decided to offshore it, that means they are willing to have a subpar service. Accept it and move on. If you are someone who provides technical skills in these areas, see the writing on the wall. If you are young and/or have technical skills, you may want to work elsewhere. Your skills won’t be valued here.

Not sure what issues you are seeing with sending jobs overseas, but you make it sound like it's a gigantic failure (it's not).

To put things into perspective, to justify houston jobs, global projects, process engineers, etc are mutualizing costs (making outsourced jobs more expensive while reducing houston costs). Soon management is going to see through that strategy and start getting rid of more spring campus headcount.

We’ve been offshoring jobs for over a decade. In that time, I have learned that the Houstons staff are the ones that have to do more in order for this to look successful. Don’t make the same mistakes previous Houston staff have done and take ownership of the issues due to managements decisions. Management needs to know when offshoring works and when it doesn’t. When Houston staff go over and beyond to make it work, it signals management that there are no problems. Let them problems be exposed. They need to be addressed and not covered up. Management needs to know about this in order to do their job and fix this.

Am convinced that this is what EM is counting on: make people leave, it costs less/nothing for the company...

The PIP process shenanigans is about to see a wave of regretted resignations. EM may just hit its own headcount targets by promoting a toxic work environment.

Management claims that the size of the workforce won’t decrease. Nothing to be said about country by country impact. They’ve done this plenty of times already in the past, the only difference this time might be magnitude of impact to North America. Just like our esteemed CEO, technically correct, but insensitive and tone deaf.
