Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

This could have been done better

I've now experienced both types of layoffs. I've been brought in a room and told the site is closing in 90 days and now this. They both stink. If the company chooses to operate differently and layoff people it's with in their right. I think there is no good way to do it.
However, these would have made it more bearable for myself:

  1. I would say it could have been done swifter. People should have been told with in 2 week a of that initial announcement. This waiting game is not only having negative effects on individuals, but the productivity is out the window.
  2. It should have been delayed until after the pandemic if it could have been afforded.
  3. They could have held off on the stock but back if they knew they would be laying off 1000's
  4. They should have done the layoffs before the announcement of a $4bil purchase with 9000 new bodies. That's a pretty big slap in the face to the people that built ALL and are facing elimination.
  5. They could have started with a voluntary early retirement program to allow those that wanted to leave to do so and re-access their staffing and need for RIFS.

Lastly, I believe the leaders should not have implied there would not be layoffs, knowing full well of this plan, on the town hall early on in the pandemic. That is not transparent.

The 60 day notice isn’t out of the kindness of their hearts along with offered transitional training it’s a LEGAL REQUIREMENT called the Warn Act and it is enforceable via the Department of Labor. Look at dol.gov at your state for any additional severance perks that may apply. Educate yourself.

I could be worse, my friend was on paternity leave and on the morning he returned they had a company meeting where it was announced the company was closing immediately. He arrived at work before 8 am and by noon he had everything out of his desk as box trucks were arriving and by 5 pm the entire office had been cleared out.

His wife had given notice the week before and the company was nice enough to let her rescind her notice.

An even worse layoff at another company was to bring us into a room and tell us the company is closing and we are all laid off immediately. That was after we just made plans for the next year and had no idea it was coming. Only slightly better was another company that merged with a larger company and 3 months later after getting them up to speed we got 2 weeks notice. I know lots of people here are worried but you do have time to prepare for any outcome. So prepare and use this time to your advantage.

As in no advanced warning. I've shown up to work and been told the site is closing and I'm laid of in 90 days. No adviced warning, just HR showing up and calling us in for a meeting. Vs this, we were pre-warned of upcoming layoffs June 11th. Both are not pleasant. I think the not knowing and stressing over the outcome for the last 2 months has been worse. I still do not know my fate as of this post.

Great points. What is the second type of layoff?
