Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Allow older employees to retire so the young can stay

Why can Allstate let the older employees at retirement age retire with a package. What a horrible time to lay off people with unemployment being at the highest rate and worries about Covid. Shame on Allstate.

Very true! I'm 60+ and have two kids in college. I'm sure I'm not alone. This will be a severe blow to many families, Tom.

Back in 2000 (?) Allstate offered VTO - voluntary termination option to all of Home Office and they were shocked at the number of people that opted to take the package and go. They were caught off guard and had a brain drain. They still have PTSD from that which is why if you search here you'll see comments like "they said no VTO ever again". Sadly they have such id–tic HR leaders they didn't put a TRO-Targeted Retirement Option on the table this time. (True comment on leadership here - no one speaks up, all sheep) They probably could have avoided most of the layoffs if they had offered TRO to age 5x and up. They could have put a quota on it – the first 3000 for example so if you opt in early you get the package. They could have fine tuned it by surveying first and then selecting the right age in order to get the correct number of people. For a "data"company they really screwed this up!

Well, any according to Allstate’s logic, anybody that survives the layoffs needs to be flexible to change (Allstate implements massive changes every 2-3 years by reinventing the wheel). If you like stability and being in your comfort zone neither you nor I won’t last here unfortunately. Seems like Allstate is going all or nothing on direct sales like Geico and Progressive and in regards to claims with innovations like Virtual Video live App to write estimates. They just paid $5 billion cash to buy National General . So if you’re 55 years old and up to date on technology and still have enough left in the tank they’ll keep you is what I’m thinking . Just be prepared every 2 years for more massive changes and maybe more work dumped on you when they decide they can lay off more people and give you their job duties because they were in redundant roles . They’re going to work any of us that survive this round of layoffs to the bone.

A plan should be considered to allow anyone with tenure (regardless of age) should be allowed to exercise their desire to accept a severance package through this process. Allstate should be held accountable to protecting American jobs. If not, Americans should stop supporting companies that plan to outsource careers.

Short version, because that’s age discrimination. Performance is not age specific. An assessment that might be designed to identify skills of the future also has nothing to do with age. Hell if all things are equal and you have more tenure you’ll be safe.
Are you that naïve to think that this wasn’t thought through?

They want to make sure they keep the people who can get dumped on. I know many older employees who would take voluntary termination with severance just to get them by for a year. No go.

I normally don't let remarks on age get under my skin, but this one has. Just because someone has aged, doesn't mean they no longer have obligations or cant contribute. Please stop thinking that an older person doesn't matter. Just because someones life expectancy is less than yours, doesn't mean their life is over.
