all the L.P. guys do is sit in the camera room and blast music while the store is getting robbed every day. I watch it happen and call and nothing is done about it. They are useless and macy's knows it. They really need to get with the times and get rid of these people. If they don't I think i'm going to apply because I would actually enjoy getting paid to do nothing!

Theirs nonething else they can do. Can't touch a suspect, can't chase a suspect, can't accuse a suspect, cant leave the sidewalk
Thinker made a great post. AP is hard. In my store, we only have two detectives and the security supervisor, who has to answer to the completely incompetent and uninterested store manager. Plus we are a "target" store or something, I don't remember the exact name, but because of our zip code, there are even more rules for us. The demographics of our zip code do not match the demographics of our shoppers and shoplifters, so apprehensions have to be done very carefully. No denying there are bad AP apples, but there are many many good ones who are often in danger. And then on top of it, they gave to drive back to the store at 2a for alarm calls.
I've been with Macy's for almost 40 years at the same store. They've been "defunding" security/lp/ap little by little every single year. When I 1st started there were more security staff than I can count. Now there's only about 3. And they're expected to do the same job they did 40 years ago with less people. Just like the rest of us. As for the music? the makeup counters and every lease dept at least in my store plays music too. You're being picky.
Looking at cameras for much of the day is boring, so AP teams are typically allowed to listed to music when at their monitors. The music should be at a low volume and not distract other colleagues or customers. AP has it tough right not, we are hands off, which means that we can't stop shoplifters if they choose not to cooperate (we can no longer touch or handcuff them).
Our focus right now is on employees like the person who posted this message. We come in early to watch colleagues, we are doing bag checks, and trying to discourage shop lifters by making them aware that they are being watched. A lot of risk for someone making barely over minimum wage and we now report to the Store Manager who has zero AP experience and has too much on their hands to find much time to detectives.
This happens in Manhasset, I have yet to see the store manager control the situation.
in this day and age of entitlement, we should be thankful that we even have paying customers!
It's better to look the other way. These thieves are highly sophisticated. They work in teams. The first group bags the products and staches it. Second group comes in and takes it out of the store. There's a leader on his phone directing the operation. If you interfere another person will distract you by making a scene . Also they will spray you with pepper spray. Why should a person making minimum wage get involved?? The police are never called. Even when you are being threatened. Macy's has insurance....Also the thieves try to get you to hit them so they can sue . When I first started at the store I couldn't believe that no one saw the thieves.. they knew better ....why risk your life for a box of fragrance??
Unfortunately people like to think they know all that is going on in life. That is one downfall to technology.
Do you know what rules AP has to work by? Are you aware of the process that a new AP associate must go through to be able to make apprehensions? Do you have a detailed knowledge of the instructions that have come down through the AP corporate leaders?
No you don't.
AP works under strict guidelines and they cannot be circumvented. While I will not go into them, as that would not be appropriate, please know that their job is one that is probably the most difficult due to the rules constantly changing.
By the way let's add in there the inherent dangers of stopping theft offenders, are you aware of them? I am aware of how many AP associates have been injured, had guns drawn on them, been stabbed, and injured to the point of having surgery. Yes, bitten to the point of reconstructive surgery, assaulted violently, and any injury you can imagine.
Remember you do not know everything going on in your store and through the corporate lines so before you judge others, think a bit.
Also, would you want to be in the hospital for a few weeks due to an incident?
Stop judging others and concentrate on what YOU can do to make a better world, then do it.
Yep in my store they sit in camera room and make fun of everyone blasting rap music.
